to the thorens and garrard owners.

what is the sound difference and characteristics between the two brands and how they compare to the sl1200 mk 2?

are all vintage thorens have bouncy suspension like the linn?

hi heane
i have both the td 124 mk1 aqnd the garrard 310 grease bearing. personally i prefferred the 301 over the thorens, both turtables are not bouncy like say a michelle both are very stable but i find the 301 to be more solidly built. some people feel the garrards are more dynamic sounding

mael- Chances are I'll be using a Denon DL-103R. One of my 301s is using a DL-103R on a 12in arm. I plan to use a 12in arm also on the 124. Though they different arms, I'd like to see how the sonics compare. Phonostages will be the same.

Btw, once the 124 is up and running, I will be able to answer your query about the sonic diff between a Garrard 301, Thorens 124 & Technics SL-1200. I'll mount the Denon DL-103R on a universal headshell and swap between the 124 & SL-1200. The 301 already has a DL-103R mounted.

Hello doc,

Nice TD124 MKII, looks fresh from where I stand.

FWIW, I think I am hearing a difference in sound when the TD 124 uses a CLD plinth or a hollow type one. It seems the hollow type have an edge in the top end presentation while the CLD have more authority in bass. I do not know why since I use both with the rubber grommets attached but I suspect the TT resonate differently depending on how much mass you have underneath it.

Also, may I suggest to have someone build you an arm board made up of solid wood instead of plywood assuming that the one you have there is plywood. I tried plywood and mdf and I found the hardwood (any type, I use cheap maple on my MKI and Sapele on my MKII) superb in draining vibrations especially if you did not install the rubber rings in mounting the SME base plate. And if you are already changing the arm board, do not forget to attach a wire from the ground point of the TT (underneath the middle brace of the arm board skeletal frame) if you have two prong AC plug on the table (unless someone modified it) because it is convenient to troubleshoot the TT hum once you connect the SUT to it with this wire being accessible.

Another one, which as much as possible I do not want to include here because people will call me crazy, is regarding the pulley. On the top of the pulley, you will see that the shaft have a hole on it. I put a ball bearing just the right size to sink in on this opening and in my assessment, it reduced the vibrating sound from the pulley as the idler wheel interface to it when playing. Sounds ridiculous yeah? :D :D

I am looking forward in seeing your completed project.

regards,

Abe
