Good for you! If it is just the plug then you can possibly change that. You can also buy a power cord with a molded male plug and you could replace the entire cord or have a tech do it for you. Try to get at least a 18 awg cable. Better if it is bigger.

I have a Thorens TD160 super, RB 300 tonearm fitted with AT OC5 cart. An SME 3009R tonearm is under study to replace my RB 300.

Thorens TD166 MkII

Postby Steely Nad » Mon Nov 20, 2006 7:00 am

Sir,

I have a bit of a question for you and everyone. The TT I got is installed w/ a SHURE VSTIII type of cartridge/stylus. My bro says its a very sensitive type of cart and one used in audiophile LP's. Is this true? Coz merong talagang consistent na parte ng plaka na tumatalon sya. My bro says, it does not happen in his TT.

Your advise pls.

hi, i'm not sure if it's the cart per se. do you have the right weight (tracking force) or anti-skate settings? i hang the weight on the 2nd notch from the base on both notched thin arms at the back of the arm. :)

Will try that. As I got the unit from my friend, never changed any setting yet. The weight is still on the 1st notch for both arms. Will try it as you said and let you know....Thanks.

By the way, how about the round black dial...should it be in the 1, 1.5 or 2 setting?

Got a TD160.....simply a "can't go wrong turntable".

Using a GRADO BLACK cart/stylus.

As you can see, the RCA's are so old and brittle...plan to modify this dude into this one before I go home next year...for flexibility in IC that can be used.

Get a bubble level and make sure the TT is level.

Best if you can get hold of a Shure SFG2 tracking force gauge. Set the tracking force at 1.2g or even 1.25g and the anti skate at about the same or slightly less at 1.

See how that goes.

Thanks, Audiophileman. Also got a Cambridge Audio 540P MM Phonostage. My brother, Devo went here in Singapura to visit...ayun, ADELPHI ang tinambayan buong linggo.

The previous owner (also a shop owner here) together w/ Devo made sure the TT is aligned and balanced. But you're right...accuracy is most important. Dami LP's dito mga bro...I got the much coveted Freddie Aguilar "Anak"...and Devo too. He is bringing in sealed LP's of Diana Krall and Norah Jones...for personal use of course. On the plane today, am sure he can't wait to test 'em on his gears at home.

Thanks again for the advice.
