Mamimili,

Got the jig from Home Depot. There may be jigs that could be cheaper but It was the lowest price I could find. One router bit was included in the kit.

Hi,

Which Home Depot? Tried looking at Alabang, they dont have it on stock.

Thanks

Alex,

Odaey got it in the US, I think (it's in one of his post) :) I was also planning to go to a local home depot when I read his post on where he got it :(

It's my first time to do a dovetail joint. A second pass is actually encouraged to smoothen the edges. It became half blind because it was the only bit included in the kit and the wood that I had was oversized 3/4.

hehehe, anyway the half blind dovetails seem to look much better on projects as such... the half blind dovetails is so much nicer in lots of ways and is often harder to perfect.
I can hardly miss a thread that has dovetails in the title... :) it is like a magnet for me :geek: :geek:

Two of the joints came out a bit loose than I wanted so I cheated a little by applying turbo glue on the inside of the loose joints to maintain the right angle. It might not be acceptable for you purists.

hehehe. part of woodworking is hiding mistakes :geek: , and partly the better you can hide them the better you become. one trick is to sand the joint before the glue dries. that way the the loose joints will be covered with the same wood and not stand out. also using contrasting wood makes it easier when gaps arises.
I often use them on drawer fronts usually rabbeted too. here is one during dry fitting.

but for carcass work I stay with the through dovetails, it much easier to make and fit.
Image
I even wanted to see what it would look like if I made casing for tube amps using those joints and contrasting wood.
Image
and I think that half blind dovetails are the better choice for the tube casing plinth or tube amp casings when it comes to aesthetics.

btw, you should try shellac as a finish on the plint you made, it should make it look stunning and highlight the wood even more... they call it French polish and is what true piano finish is all about.
here is an example with Dao...

and on Dao and Narra...

Jon, Alex,

I'm pretty sure the price won't exceed $50. Quite encouraging way to make a budget project.

Timber,

Thanks for the advice about shellac, will try to find a good source.

I have a small jar of linseed oil. Any experience on it?

I really don't know any supplier here right now.

I think Mindoro is the usual source here in Bats, but I get mine from Baguio.

Linseed oil is fine, but you would want to used Boiled Linseed Oil (BLO) since it dries faster, linseed oil will dry but it takes very long to do so. it remains tacky for days until it finally cures. another option would be hardwood oil sold in Wilcon and several hardwares and carries the Sandolin brand. takes about 7days to dry but is very nice for wood as such. and application is a breeze, yo just brush it on and wipe the excess off and wait to dry na.

Sir, Darvin, would it be possible to know your Kamagong supplier as well?

Hi Jon,

This dovetail jig can be ordered from amazon.com,

http://www.amazon.com/Keller-Dovetail-System-135-1500-Journeyman/dp/B000022420/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1283911639&sr=8-5

there is somebody from pinoydvd.com that orders in bulk from amazon, he told me he can order this for us, shipping is divided among those who orders (usually they order DVD and BDs).

As a jigging illiterate, why would i want a Keller template which is three times the price of Odeay's jig?

I can't see myself making kitchen drawers, but i can see myself doing a plinth or two, maybe a custom LP rack so which one suits my inexperience best?
I have to admit i am having a circular love affair with my router, so anything that works with it is a plus for me

the keller is a very solid dovetail jig and works both with a handheld router and a router table(RT). it is where most dovetail jigs like the HD dovetailer are developed from. the keller is more robust, easier to use and sets-up better too. but if you intend to use it once a year or several times only I would suggest to have someone do it for you instead (from those who is getting the jig), that way you all save a penny or two.
also there is a learning curve for these jigs before you can become proficient.
I have the Leigh 18" superjig and what separates it from those is that it can do the dovetails in variable spacing, which is important if you want a balanced joint all the time. the learning curve on this is even worse... |( but once you get through it the results make them worthwhile :geek:

there really is so many ways to skin a cat, one of my favorite joints due to simplicity would be splined miter joints. it isn't as strong as dovetails but it should be more than enough for a plinth or a tube casing. easier to make and pleasing as well. there are other variations but the purpose is the same. to add gluing surface to strengthen the joint.
