My Technics SL1000 mkII restoration

Postby bruno » Mon Nov 19, 2007 10:43 am

I'm in the process of restoring my turntable. Where can I find a good shop to have this repainted?

The material is said to be made of MAZAK. An alloy of Magnesium, Aluminum, Zinc and Copper. It's not good to be anodized.

Check Vinyl Engine. Somebody restored an SP-10. Check the threads. He showed how he did it. No repainting.

What the fellow did in Vinyl Engine was sand it. A homogenous finish is quite difficult to achieve. And maintaining it is quite a burden as it tarnishes easily.

If you will check the thread http://www.vinylengine.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=8157&highlight= I posted a picture of my turntable there too. Under the username ran.

Last night I had the strong urge to dismantle it and hopefully I can bring it back together before the hifi show.

What about buffing to a smooth metallic finish then clear coating to prevent tarnish? At least you retain the original look. Just a thought.

After almost 5 hours, its already past 12mn, I'm so tired and I got work tomorrow, I have to call it a day. Tested that it was still working. Still need to screw that armboard and put the Technics badge back on.

Very well done! I'm sure you're proud of the work you did, as we are too.

It's now time to forget the gear (for a while  ) and listen to the music

Congrats and glad you shared your story.

ps.

Ang sarap lagyan ng ET nito  This is THE Technics I would love to have!

Thanks for appreciating my diy efforts. The urethane finish is not A1. It has some rough spots.

I have seen somewhere in the net where an ET linear tracking tonearm was used. I will explore on this possibility as a next project.

I will chronicle some of the highlights of the restoration project later.

I mentioned it in my post above. It's the original issue TECHNICS BLACK OBSIDIAN PLINTH for the SP-10. It wasn't designed for anything else.
