racio,

for general listening, i.e., 1812 to (Led) Zeppelin

1. Coincident Triumph Signatures
2. Eric-1*
3. Triangle Comete 1*
4. Infinity Kappa+

* depending on preference, the order could be reversed
+ with the Audience tweak, this will bump off Triangle one position down

For Rock

1. JBL LX2002
2. Infinity Kappa

there are now a number of non-diy commercial speakers out there that are set compatible.. here's some on the top of my mind:

http://www.horninghybrid.com/Loudspeakers.htm
Image
Horning from Denmark

http://www.musicconnection.de/3erserie.html
Image
Dynavox from Switzerland

Image
Odeon La Traviata from Germany above

Image
Bahsen Engineering's Magnificator from Denmark

These cost a lot.. but there are less pricey types
more to follow....

Arnold,

I've had the Coincident Victory's, and found them to be pretty lean and lightweight, as well as "tipped up" a bit. What I initially thought to be detailed and transparent, became quite fatiguing in the long run. Does the Triumph have a different sonic signature?

Red76,

Wow, I'd love to hear Tommy Horning's speakers! Have you heard these already? Does anyone here use a pair?

Thanks for responding to my query pare. In fairness to the speakers ranked lower in Arnold's list, this of course shouldn't be construed as the final say on them. Personal/individual preference should still prevail. And I must commend our friend here who thoughtfully shared his opinion. :)

OF, i have not heard the Victory but i think the Triumph is the reverse of what you described. I have what can be thought of a "bright" sounding system due to 2A3, silver cables, but the Triumph gave it warmth, and unbeatable sounstaging and imaging. never fatiguing by a bit, to these ears.

Arnold,

Thanks for your impressions of the Triumph. Now if they only had a distributor here. . . .

How about this one? Let's pray Keith aka Nephilim goes for it!

Von Schweikert DB99 MkII

Image

For this incredible sense of realism combined with the near flawless imaging and huge soundstage capabilities, and a perceived depth that is very impressive, I give the dB-99 MkII my highest recommendation: Publisher's Choice Most Wanted Component 2004.

It's harmonic richness and correct timbre is a joy to hear, time after time - no matter what amp you own, or what type of music you listen to. Trust me I sent it through all the audiophile paces and it refused to give out or fall on its face. If you enjoy killer bass, with a musical heart, this speaker has its own and it performs totally integrated as well. When you think about this it really makes the dBdb-99 one of the most affordable loudspeakers available today when you consider it comes standard with great bass amps.

It comes as an absolute pleasure to revisit the sound of a Von Schweikert loudspeaker with the unique qualities I enjoyed so much in my original VR-6. There's exists an effervescence and openness to this loudspeaker, coupled with a sensitivity that will allow almost any amplifier to make it sing, that is instantly noticeable and, in my opinion separates this transducer from the usual suspects you normally hear. So much so, I couldn't bear to think about returning them, so I bought 'em! Hey, every reviewer needs at least one high efficiency speaker system in his arsenal.

the avant-gard UNO at 100 db efficiency is a flea-power amp user's dream speaker! i wonder when we will ever hear a pair on RP? might be a rumor but i heard a top analog dealer is bringing in one!

a quote on the Avant-Garde Uno:
"If you're considering entry into the world of the spherical hornspeaker, the UNO is just right. The UNO can be placed even in small rooms. It offers what a normal loudspeaker does not have 100% emotion. With an efficiency rating of 100 dB, the UNO is a rocket among conventional loudspeaker systems! This amount of high efficiency and high dynamics means more musical detail, and most importantly, lots more fun."
