Has anyone seen, heard, built a 4212 tube amp?

Postby mozilla » Fri Jan 24, 2003 11:43 pm

This beast runs at a hair raising 3000V and output 70W of SE power or 1.4KW at PP!

Max annode dissipation is 275W and the filament burns at 90W just to fire it up. Pretty useful for those cold winter nights.

The Type 4212 is obsolete & extremely expensive. The last remaining stock disappeared into Japan where they ended up in the houses of the exceedingly rich and ..believe this or not..into these guys' discos!!

I have not seen one myself either. I did encounter a writeup about it when I dug out a 1994 issue of HiFi World that featured rare tubes. I'll scan the pic and post it here.

The Type 4212 tube. It's about 1.7x the height of a 300B.

WE 212 A aka 4212

Postby johnmarc0 » Thu Jan 30, 2003 3:52 am

The 4212 is actually a WE 212A and the sucessor of the 211. It was initially used as transmitter drivers for AM radio stations and shipboard radio equipment. In the 50's it commonly used as high power screen modulator for AM radio stations until the 845 showed up in the picture. The cause of the demise of the 212 in industry was alternate sourcing, as it was solely second sourced from GE like the 211/VT4C and the base has an odd pin configuration solely sold by GE and WE. The only consistent source of the 212 socket is yamamoto sockets in Japan custom made and 500USD a pop.

It has reached a cult status in Japan as as it can be rolled with WE equivalents. Most of the remaining stock was shipped tyo Japan in the mid 80's when MJ first shown a project article on this tube.

Anyone, interested on the specs of this tube send me a howl, I'll email you the specs.

If I'm not mistaken It's made by STC of England a licensee of
Western Electric that why the designation is 4212E.
John is right it's WE 212A and they metal plates instead of the graphite
plates which the 845 and 211 use. And it's bigger than 300B
I like the sound of the metal plates than graphite plates.

4212E aka WE212A

Postby johnmarc0 » Fri Jan 31, 2003 1:32 am

I actually have three pieces of the 212 but all of them are broken, I also have 5 pieces of the 211/VT4C only one is intact. These tubes are so damn fragile and power hungry.

211E, 845.

Postby ambel » Fri Jan 31, 2003 10:27 am

I hear you the filament are so fragile. I bought a pair of RCA 845 and
put in the seat of my truck and then I did a sudden brake. The boxes
flew in front of the cab. After when I went home and inspect the tubes
the filaments are broken what a bummer.
There is an article in the Sound Practice. Their homebrewer of the month
who built the WE 212A amp. He's name is Ed Billeci from Oregon.
I've got the E.F Johnson sockets for the 212A but I don't have the tubes.

ef Johnson Sockets

Postby johnmarc0 » Fri Jan 31, 2003 12:20 pm

Hey Ambel,

Talking about Johnson sockets, Am trying to find 8 pieces of these darn EF Johnson porcelain top mount 4 pin sockets it's hard to get by, I have a pair of 6 pin and 5 pins but I need at least 8 pieces on the 4pins for a variety of chopping board mounted projects.

Do you have an idea where I can get them? tried all the net vendors, no success got the cheap chinese bayonets. Your the one wired in the west coast area maybe you can recommend a vendor or you snap them for me in those swap meets. I use to see them in hamfests and hamventions but that was in east coast.

John

PS

I borrowd the the 5 star 5751s and PQ 6922s from racio, will give you feed back on listening tests once I installed them in the reincarnated cary preamp.

Ciao

EF Johnson

Postby ambel » Fri Jan 31, 2003 12:46 pm

It's hard to source it the Koreans, Japanese, and Chinese that bought
all the remaining stock. I've got an extra pair of 4 pin EF Johnson bayonet
for 211 If you interested.

I may be, let's see if I can get the 845s cheap, It's still in the 200USD range here in manila. Some guys use pullout 845 as preamp but 840 volts is just too much for a pre for. Also, I have a few 71As u interested? it's quite rare now if you fancy pre 30's tubes give me a howl.
