help in identifying DIY Speakers

Postby harvey_a_vasquez » Wed Jan 08, 2014 10:21 pm

Heya,
Just thought I'd drop this question here as it is the most appropriate place to ask.
Saw this in one of the music threads. Interesting looking speaker setup.

Wondering if anyone can identify the setup and why are they stacked on top of each other in a corner.
Cheers,
Harvey

Yup, they look like 811 horns. As for the way it's stacked, it's not being used at all ( amp on top and a mop leaning on the speakers is a giveaway)

Thanks Guys!
I just love the look of them and the form factor.
This would be a great companion to my modular synth.

I know I read somewhere about advocates of horns here in this forum.
Guess I need to do a bit more research on that one.

based on the opening size, the woofers underneath could be altec 414. looks like they were studio monitors for recording studios in the early 60's?

Altec 9844 monitors = 2 x 414(x), 811 + 806/802/902 depending on vintage. There's a domestic version by Altec (model escapes me at the moment...) and Heath sold a kit version AS21.

Thanks for the help guys!
This certainly piqued my interest back on speakers especially now that I am into making soundscapes. So this is another level of control that I can affect the sound. I know it will be difficult for me to find vintage horns in components or built so I was thinking are there local folks here that does cloning for these beasties?
Then saw this:

DIY Multicell horn
I must say they look awesome!
For guys using horn setup, how are they in comparison to the modern speaker system for live music?
And lastly why are they mounted on top and without any enclosure?
Sorry for the noob questions. :emo:

Just to cap this thread, I did message the guy who posted the picture.
He did reply from my PM:
The speakers are 1970s Klein & Hummel OZ active broadcast / studio speakers. They are based on Altec chassis, here is a link to some informations:
Klein & Hummel OZ active speakers
There is no reason, why I stacked them, I only use the top ones. I had the chance to buy 4 of them - they are pretty rare - and I did it. It would be nice to hava a quad monitoring arrangement with them, but therefore I would need a bigger space, wich is not this easy in Berlin..

Thanks again.
