Suggestions on how to buy vinyls cheaply

Postby corrsty » Tue Jan 28, 2003 7:21 pm

Since new LPs are non-existent in the Philippines, its basically foreign trip purchases or online shopping for us vinyl nuts who still want to get their music fix in the best format available.

However, high prices, due to continuing peso decline and exorbitant shipping costs, prevent us from enjoying the relatively vast, new vinyl releases available today and tomorrow (not including the millions and "MILLIONS" of used records).

We cannot blame our local music suppliers for not stocking LPs in their stores since there are very few demands (but hell we can blame them for the very poor music offerings we could choose from --- how many Ibiza cds can one really want?).

Through this topic, maybe we can devise plans on how we can safely and cheaply get new LPs (and seedies.....)

Some popular online stores that offers LPs:

Red Trumpet
Music Direct
Acoustic Sounds

Vinyls in these stores are expensive and I'm based in LA.
I used to buy it from Acoustic Sound, Music Direct but since
I found out the record meets and swap meets I look to buy it
from them and I look for collectibles.
Records are dirt cheap on a good day you can find it for 50 cents
or a buck. So instead of spending 50 bucks for 2 records I can
get tons of them.
A good source for Jazz is Fantasyjazz.com they got a very good
catalogue.

thanks for the info.

Its true. Records are a dime a dozen in the States. When I was in NYC, I used to raid those dollar bins in Academy Records. I was in heaven during those days. I used the Balikbayan box to ship the records I amassed. Now, I'm back in Manila and vinyls are hard to come by. There are very few sources for them. The sellers know this and they price them accordingly.

If we could find a way to bring those cheap records here, then I'll be a happy camper!

The cheapest way to get LPs it seems is to keep track of an aging or terminal analog fan - then buy his treasured LPs from his wife who usually doesn't have any idea how much the LPs cost after he passes away. There maybe even instances where the wife will be happy to see you cart away thousands of LPs which are of no use to her - for free!

Hans,

A viable suggestion. What better way to honor the deceased vinyl junkies than to continue preserving their precious record collection.

Another thing to watch may be some Radio Stations.
I've heard that last year, some radio stations closed down, and they were selling LPs at bargain basement prices. :)

Tapos remember that 'gold mine' of LPs that they found in Baguio? Nasa news yata, around 4000 (or was it 40,000) records daw, left by them Americans dun sa John Hay.

You can a dime but it's the condition dirty and scratch.
And records dealers know their stuff specially the jazz and classical
records their market is Japan. The Blue Note deepgrove, RCA
6 eyes, Cleff, Dials and others old Jazz labels command a premium
price. And with the advent of Ebay they got a bigger market.
Here's are the record labels that I look for in jazz Contemporary Records
specially the ones that were recorded bu Roy Dunann.
Impulse, Verve, Atlantic, most of the jazz were done by Rudy Van Gelder
specially the John Coltrane but it's a hit and miss when it comes to the
sound. Also Fantasy, Riverside but the price is like the Blue Notes.
But on Classical there i a lot of choice I found lately that there is a lot
to choose from forget about RCA Living Stereo and Mercury Living Presence. They are pricey and you compete with collectors that has a
deep pocket. The Philips, EMI, Harmonia Mundi, the reissue London-Decca
from the 1980 are superb. And they are dirt cheap 50 cents to buck.
And the Telarc whic was recorded in digital are good too.
I've got Cecil Licad debut album in Columbia Rachmaninoff's 2nd piano
Concerto and Rhapsody from the theme Paganinni which was done
by Jack Renner using Soundstream equipment. He's the Telarc engineer.
The recording is good you listen Licad's fiery performance.
One thing with vinyls it's the hunt you never know what you will find
most of the collectibles that I got are from these Swap meets and
thrift shops. The Sheffield Labs I used to buy them before but right
I just skip them.

if you're into dance music, MusicOne and Tower Records sell a lot. My recent purchase was at MusicOne for P150 each. Really clean and sounds very good in MY SYSTEM.

Hey, thanks for the various info. regarding what good labels to look for.
As for the Telarcs, I guess even lps recorded digitally can also sound great. I'll try not to pass up on them in the future.

Arnold,

I hope MusicOne will also offer full albums, not just dance singles!

Just like what Hyperion mentioned, I am in fact starting to raid one of my old friend's LP collection as he has started to copy all his LPs to CDRs.

Poor guy :(

Lucky me!

I enjoy buying records because you never know. What's in store for
you. It's the hunt that I get excited at like finding the Casino Royale
album on Colgems for 2 bucks in mint condition. After being humiliated
by a record dealer who has copy for $250.00 and it's Canadian pressing.
Belafonte's Live at Carnegie Living Stereo 1S pressing for 50 cents.
Ella Fitzgerald "Here comes clap hands Charlie" for a buck.
Groove notes just reissued the Ray Brown's "Solar Energy" on SACD
and vinyl. They will redo some of the Concord Jazz catalogue.
These were done in the 1980's and the records are available in the
used market for cheap. So far I have some of the Ray Brown stuff
and Cal Tjader and they very good recordings.
Another good label are the Windham Hill if you like new age.
Like the the Tuck and Patty albums highly recommended.
The Patrick O'Hearn on Private Music and Also The Art of Noise on Virgin.
Here's one of my favorite the soundtrack from the movie "Mission"
on Virgin Records. The Willie Nelson are excellent too. The "Stardust"
is I think overrated but I like the "You always in my mind" album.
The 1970's are also good the Breads, Don McClean, Cat Stevens,
James Taylor, America, Eagles and etc.
On the Beatles albums it's a hit and miss the only one so far that I
like the recording is "Let it Be" the rest that I have are teribble sounding
and they are great albums like the "Abbey Road", "Sgt. Peppers"
I have the Apple label. According to a record guru the one's tobe had
are mono on Sgt. Peppers and Parlophone gold and black label.
You are talking at least $1000 in mint condition.
There are so many vinyls out there but you need to look for
them a lot of gems that needs to be discovered.

More lp's

Postby ambel » Sat Feb 01, 2003 12:14 am

Here are more vinyls that I really like:
Simon and Garfunkle "Live at Central Park". Performance and Recording
are very good.
Bobby Enriquez "Wild Piano"
This was recorded digitally using a Sony PCM but it's live 2 track recording
so it's a minimal recording i.e. no limiters, compression, and editing.
Performance is Bobby at his best specially the solo on Classical gas.
Holly Cole "Temptation"
The vinyl was issued by Classic Records and they did a good job on this
one. Performance is very expressive but you need to listen to album
frequently in order to get it.
U2 "Joshua Tree" and "Rattle and Hum"
On Joshua the recording is average but it's the performance.
Rattle and is better recording wise.
Harry Connick Jr. soundtrack from" When Harry met Sally",
"We are in Love", "30", and "Songs that I Heard".
The first two are recorded digitally but talk of dynamics they swing baby.
These are reference to voice for speed and dynamics.
Frank Sinatra to many specially the Capitol labels. The Reprise are hit
and miss but here's the one the I prefer:
Sinatra with Count Basie" Live at the Sand'.
Sinatra with Duke Ellington " Francis A and Albert K.
Joe Jackson "Steepin Out"
The Clash "Combat Rock" and "London Calling".
Led Zeppelin "Song Remains the same."
Peggy Lee on Capitol Records.
Enya "Watermark".
To be continued.

It's a Mobile Fidelity Disc

Postby ambel » Wed Feb 12, 2003 1:11 am

If the album is remastered and pressed by Mobile Fidelity MFSL then
they would command a good price specially the UHQR version. It's
200 gram disc the priciest that I know and a lot of collector are looking
for it is Pink Floyd "Other side of Moon" last time that I check is this
album went up to $1500. The hot one's are the Beatles and Sinatra box
sets. Also the DCC vinyls are expensive.
