hi audiophileman2002,

Maybe you're referring to Just Friends by LA4? This D2D copy would be my third favorite jazz album. The first cut Noveau Bach, alone, is worth the price of the entire LP. I learned from a good friend that Jason Bloom of Apogee Loudspeakers always tagged this LP with him in CES and high end shows in the past, and the effect is mesmerizing. The sax here is very full bodied and smooth. A great sax demo LP.

Yes, Jad. That is one of them. That is really a very awesome LP and could be used as a test record. The other one is the 'Pavane' pressed by East Wind. That was the original LA 4 with Shelley Manne on drums which also is awesome. I brought these two with some classical LPs and Eva Cassidy 'Songbird' when I was auditioning the Harbeth, Spendor and Audio Note speakers earlier in the week. May go for the 'British' sound. Just sold my Mezzo's but he traded in his 920.1 Electra which I'm selling now.

audiophileman2002,

Yes, the Pavane is the one with the peacock on the cover. And yes, the drums there is fabulous. :)

What I like best 'about this LA4 LP is not just the songs itself, but the movement between takes, imagine Laurindo flipping the pages of his notes while Jeff Hamilton moving his chair after the take. Awesome :)

Hey guys, as I get this notice of a new thread by Jon, I'm playing the LP of the Milt Jackson Quintet featuring Ray Brown on Impulse label, the bassist also with the L.A. 4. I'm on the cut Tenderly where there is a lot of bass solo of Ray B. This is a live recording taken in Shelley Manne's Hole in LA. Shelley Mann was the original drummer of the L.A. 4 and was replaced by Jeff Hamilton. The first two LPs of the L.A. 4 on Concord Jazz, if I recall CJ8 and CJ18 were with Shelley Mann.

What's your next speaker if I may? Since you've mentioned spendors and harbeths and have listened to them, maybe the harbeth 30s should be included. I've heard it reported to have better tweeters than the other two. Flat response too without the shallow dip in the 2-6 kHz.

Before both of us get in trouble again with the moderator, I will post in your thread 'curious speakers'. I'll post in a few as I'm just finishing an e mail negotiation with a buyer.

Yes. Will look for it.

But I also like the LA4 specially Laurindo. I like Bud on flute though. He plays the sax too.

Funny that later I saw and bought a compilation (on two track) of them four on Laserlight. There's a cut with several movements between Laurindo, and the bassist. The title escapes me, but the music really gets into my sinews. Powerful and moving.

Hey Ichabod, you should get the LPs, they sound so much better, sweeter, etc.

I have one or two LPs. Played them extensively before on my AR18s of yore. I have to literally resurrect them to life with a lot of cleaning since those days. I have an AR X1 tt lying idle. I'm just satistied simply looking at them every once in a long while. What a waste of money, but I'm treating them as part of audio furniture and collection on sorts to make me feel better sans bragging rights. Ops, someone might react to this! Be it ever so humble, that's the least I can do about them, and it's a shame! Poor Laurindo, he has to end up on the tray instead of the silver platter of analogue fame.

Make the turntable turn! Start spinning. Just get them cleaned on the VPI HW16. Please get back to analog, you'll find it more satisfying.

Thanks. There's been a long and arduous discussion (for and against tts) of that here several months back.

I will I will. My cartridge is a pickering, an old favorite of mine after I damped shure and ortofon until I could no longer buy them in Clark save those shures and audio technicas.

Whenever I can avoid getting into "me, my, mine" self I will. But audio is such a personal compromise one could hardly avoid doing so at times. It's hard to talk about something audio and not throw in some personal notes.

Thanks for your understanding.

Doris Day - Latin for Lovers

Image

A few months ago, a friend played this LP on his Canary SET amps driving a Rogers LS3/5a (15ohm) and I was immediately captivated by it.
It was the first time for me to listen to her voice, and was very taken by her singing style - very natural and with so much ease. And coupled with the fact that it was recorded using the CBS 360 Stereo system, the sound is fabulously rich, full bodied, and smooth. And so much air.....highly enjoyable. Songs include Fly Me to the Moon, Dansero, Quizas, quizas, quizas, Corcovado, etc.

I remember this particular Doris Day on open reel tape. I'd like to get a copy even on CD.

The best "Secret Love" I've heard. Straight from the heart! Doris was my fav. Use to sing "Teacher's Pet" in the school bus on the way home when I was in the grades. Nostalgia. I have to hear her on the LS 3/5A too Jadis.

in terms of sound quality, a lot. highs are crisp and clear without harshness, mids are more palpable, and bass transients and dynamics are more extended without boom and hardness. i had sold all of my ordinary cbs lps like bob james and earl klugh and now im on the road to buying them back in the half speed version.
