Maybe the thread I posted in "general audio" should be transfered here, but of course OBs are better driven by SET amps if only to broach the topic a bit more.

There's a fine coxial Stromberg Carlson 12s on ebay. Anyone looking for drivers for OBs should look at these. Mint and nice looking pair. The design is similar to the Pioneer of BenC reported here a while back. I heard these stromberg red cone drivers are nice just as their amps are. I own several strombergs and they're good. A deeper tone than the fishers with a nice huge soundstage that stays clear all the way.

If the question is for me, sorry I have no idea how these strombergs sound. But I've heard they're good like most known vintage speakers in the likes of Altec 755As, R & As, Hartleys, Corals (16 ohmers), and who knows some others like the Pioneer of BenC as he has reported here, klangfilm Siemens amongst many other German single drivers.

The 8 inch Richard Allan pair that I got are nice sounding British speakers. I like them over the Altec 4303A alnico types which were my first pair of full range speakers. The R & As sound deeper, sweeter, romantic if you like, and are extended a little further on that they can pass almost like a two way speaker sans the sometimes worrisome effects of tweeters on some program materials.

For the R & As I use an old tube rectified fisher called "the 101." PP el84s using old U.S. tubes.

The altecs are now temporarily being listened to in my sala since my wife is away in Manila for a short vacation with her folks. The De Wald amp drives them, still an el84 pp integrated. Have yet to try a SET amp from Mang Rod. So the experiment with amps is on going. But thus far I like what I hear already. Hope this helps to answer what works on SDs. Give that Pilot another listen. Regards Tony.

Detubo,

For me it sounds ok, its just like your listening into a two way speaker, complete, high, mid & low. ok ang mid & sound stage satisfied na ako. kaya lang my friend said that kulang naman daw sa bass. (syempre Open baffle nga eh!) presently using it with my ST70 & MF-XPRE.

Try adjusting the distance of your OBs to the back wall. You have to find that spot where it will optimize everything including the base. Get a good toe-in perhaps if you haven't. Mine is about 27-28 inches to the wall on the inner side, and about 38 inches on the outer. Good luck.

I hope you can try the pilot 240 on them. The pp el84s are known to be of good use on them OBs.

Tonyboy,

I'd be interested in your opinion on whether your SET or PP amps will be a more synergistic match with your OB's. :)

Tube rolling na naman

Thanks for the advise,

Nice plan sir DETUBO, maybe it will help to produce the low frequency with modification for installing the top & side panel.
