How do you tag classical music

Postby Mamimili » Sat Feb 07, 2015 4:48 pm

I ran a search and then ran another search through 84 pages of the initial search but found nothing, i would be amazed if i am the first person to ask but here goes:

How do you write ID tags for classical music?
Album artist = composer or orchestra or conductor or soloist etc?

I want to be able to find a piece easily, which to me means composer first.
If i type more i will either confuse myself or give myself too many possible answers.
So, what is the standard, if any?

The chance of you spelling those Russian names right the first time is like winning a lottery hehe

My system: composer/piece/artist or conductor/orchestra

Example: Vivaldi/The Four Seasons/Seiji Ozawa/Boston Symphony Orchestra

Agree with this system. I think this is how some record/CD stores also classify them on the shelves...

Thanks All 8)

I was doing the above but recently had some sort of "stupidity attack" and re-tagged using the artists name instead of the composer.
I am a little obsessive about anything by Martha Argerich, so i went through my files and put her "first". Then i realized that anyone else using my collection would most likely not like this method.

I use first names for composers as well, just for education's sake!

I also make up my own genre's, Bowie is filed under "Genius"...because he is

Yes! I have spent many an hour correcting my spelling!

I do have a good excuse though, i still have a dictionary from my mother inscribed with "I hope this will help with THAT spelling" dated 1965.

Sorry mom, i continue to let you down!

To me the secret to tagging classical is distinguishing the work. If the album is Brahms String Q #1 and Bartok String Q #3 and the Album is called 19th C String Q, the album info is not helpful. If you are willing to move from the constraining Album construct and instead assign the Album as Brahms String Q #1 and another Album as Bartok String Q #3 then you create a library of distinct works. With these works you can id the composer, artist, record label, etc. This is NOT how it is normally done, but for me, it makes much more sense because i care about the work and not the Album that binds several works together.

In addition- it is important to keep composer/Orch and label. Often some labels (e.g. RCA) are preferred over others.
