10 years of the Tubong Bastos

Postby Jon Agner » Fri Oct 04, 2013 2:53 pm

How time flies.... it's been 10 years since the 2A3 Single Ended Triode (SET) Amp, nicknamed "Tubong Bastos", came out as a kit

viewtopic.php?f=30&t=1859&hilit=tb2a3

Ten years has passed and It's still serving the purpose :)

probably a good idea to have the tubong bastos in one of the rooms at the hifi show. both are 10 years old.

Nice Jon!

Sayang, guys who came in later didn't have the chance to get our hands on this. Since its 10 yrs old, perhaps a "re-issue" is in order.

Ummmm... The smell of burning flux

It would be nice to know "where are the other Tonomen now?"

Any news on John Marco, Mickey and Arnold C?

Johnmarco, toobs, Mickey, and ArnoldC :)

Me, I would like to hear this again with Ike's voigts :).

Yes, it's been 10 years since the Tonomen designed this php 10k SET amp :). And along the way, there have been modifications introduced to this kit amp by those who were brave enough to build this amp. The design topology makes the amp flexible for modding :)

i built two of these 2A3's amps, the D3a was used in triode mode
as a driver and at 15 watts plate, you'd think you are listening to a big amp...
at filament voltage of 2.5 volts, hum was not an issue..
use of big irons really helps...

listening to a Norah Jones, you could hear her gasp for air as she sings,
something i did not hear on my pp amps...

This particular project was designed by Arnold. The rest of the Tonomen (JM, Mickey, Ed, VD), sourced parts, auditioned and sold them at cost! The rest is history...

Most have taken on other hobbies -- wine, cars, guns, knives, kites, watches, cameras, (wala nang iba, promise)...but it's audio that binds us still...see you all at the hifi show.

Cheers

If there's an available room wherein this can be displayed, puwede :)

I believe I heard this with the Fostex in Brines quarter wave boxes. I only ended up buying the Fostex. 10 years later I wanted a TB. Of course, it was no longer available. Memories.
