PIONEER PL-11

A guy called up the office one day and was asking if I repair turntable. I ask him what the model is and he said that it a PIONEER PL-11. I have tried to limit my repair works to the LENCOs.
Being cold on other brands, I told him that maybe it is better for him to look for a replacement table instead because the cost may just be the same anyhow if he gets a pre-owned one. However, he is insistent to have it repaired because its what he and his wife listens to and its value is priceless....and so I agree to check the unit.
I was surprised when he brought the table to the office because having connected the PIONEER brand to belt and direct drive turntables...this came out as an idler. The motor was not spinning after I plug it in and so I ask him to just leave the unit. The man left with a note if I would be able to finish it by Oct 10 because it is his wife's birthday.

Unfortunately with tons of works both in my day job as well as other restorations, i was not able to have it run by the wife's birthday.

Well, huli man ay natapos din...so here it is the now...a running PIONEER PL-11.

Congrats to you Noly and the owner. The first tt we owned was a pioneer pl-15. Bought it in 1974,it never conked out on us. However, it is belt driven unlike the pl11. Im sure the pl11 sounds really good especialy partnered with vintage gear. We partnered the pl15 with a sansui 4000 receiver and sansui sp-2500 loudspeakers considered as high end back in the day. . The sp-2500 is still with me but the sansui 4000 receiver and the pl15 was given away by my dad to a very lucky bakal bote guy. . . :( my voltes v 45 vinyl included. . . :( :( :(

Nakakainspire, Nols. Mukhang papareformat ko na yung TEAC GF 350 ko sa yo. I'm sure you can make it sing better. Susukatin ko yung dimensions. Who knows maybe you can even do wonders with its built-in speakers para mas stereo-sounding ang dating. Congratulations.

Re: TAS Completed Works (non-LENCO) - AR XA

Postby TheAnalogSource » Thu Dec 01, 2011 8:57 am

The Acoustic Research AR XA turntable is my other love.
I have always profess my love the the Lenco but I have a secret fling with the AR. My love at first listen was when i was asked to rebelt one and we compared it to a Thorens. It won by a mile in terms of musicality as well as expansive soundstaging...which could be due to its excellent suspension system and its arm design...eliminating unwanted resonance and reducing noises.
I am not sure which comes first and will try to research on it...but the venerable Linn Sondek LP12 has a very similar design concept. However at about 100-200$ mint, this table is only a fraction of an LP12 cost nowadays which can go up as much as 5000$ for a supped up model.
I come across modified ARs but as always i prefer them stock. With a light weight and light tracking cart, the AR XA will give one satisfying analog pleasures...It does to me.

Happily i was asked to assemble a NOS AR XA recently and here sharing you some pictures....

LINN SONDEK LP12 PROJECT - Dec 2011

Im so excited with this project because this table is very close to my heart. In fact, i change the title of this thread just so i can post the table out of the box. Also the reason why i have to rush all the other pending projects so i can have some quality time with Linn.

Earlier, I passed on a chance to own a mint Linn Sondek LP12 in favor to a very close audiophile friend. A few years later, we were negotiating to get the country distributorship but unfortunately it was taken by somebody else.
You can read about it everywhere but for me, the Linn is the first audiophile turntable.
Just to get my hands on the Linn is a very exciting Christmas experience i'll have this year. Looks like a very busy and musical Christmas break for me. :)

Noly, how do you rate Linn's Akito vs RB300?

HI Paul, How are you?

I havent got the chance to AB a Linn arm with an RB. Although i had a few encounters with Akitos, i really cant say.

Looking at design structure though, Linn arm are multi-pieces while the RBs are single piece. Depends on who you listen to, but for me both have pros and cons.
In the recent visit of Roy Gandi, i told him a problem i have with RB anti-skate and how it doesnt zero thus you need to get extra test to get the antiskate right especially for finer cantilever. Anyhow, im a little bias towards Linn just because my old friend Pat Morita is such a die-hard fan of them that i think he has half a dozen of lp12s and you should see how he talks with all enthusiasm about how good the table is.
