Postby Nicadraus » Fri Dec 17, 2010 9:15 pm

Hi guys! I refurbish and modify Technics SL-1200/1210 turntables. I have done more than a hundred decks already and here are pictures of some of them.

SL-1200 M3D
Before refurb:

Here's another pair I did over the week. Before I started working on it. The decks were already repainted badly. They weren't disassembled when painted so it really looked awful.

I also did this in Bacolod.

Repainted the tonearm pivot swing bridges and other tonearm components to flat black.

Repainted the pitch decal to flat black to match everything on the decks.

Image

Newly refurbished (repainted & calibrated) tonearm
Image

Modified the ground wires and replaced the RCA cables and connectors

On the way...

Repainted the both platters and sanded the sides. Repainted the rubber base as well.
Finished!

Fitted the Pop-up to bright white LEDs and removed the pitch "tick" bearing and spring.

I did my usual refurbishment on this deck.

-Repainted the base frame with automotive polyurethane thinner based paint
-repainted and overhauled the tonearm assembly
-replaced LEDs. Strobe and Pop-up LEDs to blue, 33/45rmp to bright white.
-replaced new pitch control
-replaced tonearm clip
-replaced aluminum pitch decal
-refaced the platter
-eliminated the ground wires

I know the this is not the best color but it's what the client requested. Lavender! The gloss isn't too noticeable because of its weird color. He also wanted the platter painted to white.

Other things I did were:
-replace the power stobe LEDs to bright blue
-33/45 rpm LEDs to green
-Pop-up lamp bulb conversion to bright blue LED
-pitch control calibration
-overhauled and calibrated the tone arm assembly
-ground wire elimination and modification
-rubber base repaint
-new aluminum pitch decal

This deck belongs to Embassy club. I picked it up looking like ;( :worried: :x

Looks like these decks have been submerged in the ocean for months. They look like oysters have lived on them.

AMAZING, simply amazing!

Dead 1200s resurrected nay, born again or even reincarnated! Excellent work!

I do have to raise the question: How is the performance? Is it equal or better than original specs? What is done to recalibrate the tonearm alignment, bearing play, bearing friction, anti-skate, rumble and noise, etc.

Please do not take my inquiry in a negative light. I do not want to put a damper on your excellent venture, I simply would like to spur you on toward a better product by covering areas you might have missed.

Congratulations on such fine work. AMAZING, simply amazing!

Thanks for the compliment sir Mandy. :)

To answer your question...

honestly, it took me many, many 1200s to fix and experiment with before I could master the calibration when putting back the tonearm assembly. Anti skate is an easy fix but requires a lot of unscrewing/screwing, de-soldering, etc. The legs height are adjustable which also serves as suspension. Noise, not a problem. Performance wise, most of my clients prefer their serviced decks modified, majority of which are for DJing purposes. But I could also put it back to factory condition if the client wish to. :)

Great work! :)
You must really know the 1200 very well to disassemble and reassemble it after the body work, even complete those with missing parts.

Just curious, is Works1200 your project name or you plan to provide this as a service? I think it would be good to know someone can do this kind of job in WS.

Very neat! Just wondering if you can also restore the Technics brand label text after repainting.. How much do you usually charge?

Thanks sir! Unfortunately, the Techinics brand label/logo is originally tampo stamped on the frame. I have tried silk screen and decal but it didn't turn out very original. The only way to do it without fading easily is also tampo stamping. With regards to price, it depends on the scope of work needed to be done and parts to be replaced or repaired.

:)

Hehehe! Samalat sir! I actually do auto detailing and car scale modeler as well that's why I'm very keen and meticulous with detail finish on the decks I work on. :)

husay mo, bro

1. i'd just like to ask if you can do other turntables like belt drives or idler drives.

2. i have a beloved JVC QL-F6 direct drive turntable whose 45 rpm is not functioning (the 33 rpm works well though). can you bring the 45 rpm
speed back to life?

keep up the good work. we need more talented people like you.
