Jadis,

Aside from Cecile Licad, what other local LPs/Cds that you've heard that is worth mentioning on this thread?

I'd definitely add Bayang Barrios among local artists that are worth mentioning here. Not too well known but she can really sing. Ouf friend Zach is her percussionist.

Aiza Seguerra too The idea of playing her cd on a high end system seem baduy but you will change your mind once you hear her sing on a high resolution system.

Hyperion,

Thanks. Will surely check her out.

Anyway, one LP/CD worth mentioning here is Ryan Cayabyab's "One". Ryan Cayabyab singing with his sixteen voices. Engineering wise, they were able to come out with a good, clean music even though this was made through a lot of overdubs. What made me smile was the fact that, with a properly positioned speaker, you can identify all sixteen voices (1 main vocal + 15 chorus) within the soundstage. :)

Jon Agner,

I like the following CDs, the recording is ok in most, and the artists are my personal
favorites.

1. The Best of Basil Valdes Vol.1 - This is quite an old CD, but surprisingly, my friends
have found it quite ok.

2. Roselle Nava- On Higher Ground
I wonder why she never had a better album after this one. I really thought she would
hit it big with such a wonderful voice but maybe it's not her destiny.

3. Kundiman - Star Records
A collection of beautiful pieces of old songs sung by the many talents of Star Records.

4. Love Concert- The Album (Viva)
with Zza Zza Padilla and Freestyle, and Lani, what else can I say...entertaining CD.

5. All Heart- Lani Misalucha
My favorite Lani Cd

6. Zza Live...in my life
great songs in this live Cd, form Streisand, to Louie Ocampo medleys to Cyndi Lauper.

7. Carol Banawa- Follow Your Heart
Another refreshing new voice. Too bad she had to 'retire' from singing.

A Tale of Three Lutes:

Image

The above LP is from Hungaraton, for many years graced the TAS
Super Disc List, and music by Antonio Vivaldi. A truly spectacular
chamber recording. The violins sound with a lot of 'bite' and overall
sound is lively.

Image

From Deutch Grammaphone, analog version; basically, it has the
same Vivaldi cuts in the Hungarton LP but has two other composers
as well, with I Musici performing. Sounds less grittier than the Hungaraton,
and overall, smoother in tonality.

Image

A more 'toned down' rendition of the lute concertos among the
three LPs, lesser performers but the instruments are very well
recorded and 'richer' in tone. Excellent recording for lute lovers.

Newbie,

There are test CDs from Chesky, Reference Recordings, FIM, Sheffield Labs, and even
Stereophile, try to look for them.

Mr. Jadis,

I got inspired by how you describe the recording of Brothers Four album so I listened to my copy. I agree, the music and recording are really perfect.

I went over my LP collection and found several soundracks where I like the music and recordings.

Miss Saigon Original Cast Recording. I'm not a fan of Lea Salonga. But here she's spectacular plus all the cast. I like the power she puts into music without loosing the emotions. That combination is quite rare for me.

The Phantom of the Opera Original London Cast. - This is my favorite. The mix of electronic music and orchestra were perfect. The voice of Sarah Brightman in the song Phantom of the Opera especially towards the end is really haunting and hair raising.

Night Shift Soundtrack - Very nice music of B Bacharach and Carol Bayer Sager including That's what friends are for performed by Rod Stewart. Artist includes Al jarreau, Quarteflash, Pointer Sister, Heaven 17, Talk talk. Only complaint is out of 3 copies I have, all of them have distorted sound in the last track of Side A which is Stewart's That's what frends are for.

If you have heard these LPs, I'd like to know your views.

dinolara,

Good to know you liked the Brothers Four Beatles Songbook too.
I do not have the Saigon LP nor CD, and like you, I am not a fan of Lea.
I liked the Phantom very much on CD and the music is really quite a change
from other kind of musicals. But my all-time favorite is Les Miserables.
The songs are more touching and romantic. As for the Night Shift soundtrack,
sorry, I have not heard it.

The Elusive lute record:

Quite frankly I have never seen nor touched this LP till a friend
brought it over to have it played....and wow....no wonder this is
priced at $200 at Audiophile International.....Very rich string sounds
and the lute is rendered in such an authentic fashion. Respighi may
not be Vivaldi but those who love Vivildi's music will be at home here.
Pleasant and light chamber music....but most of all, what a fantastic
recording...

Newbie,

To add to Jadis' response:

You may want to start with Sheffield Labs test & burn-in CD. The first half of this CD will aid you in properly aligning your speakers, while the second half are selections from some of their recordings.

You may also wanna get the Chesky Records "The Ultimate Demonstration Disc" - Guide to Critical Listening. There's a narrator explaining details about the music played and what you the listener should be hearing. This will aid you in properly understanding some audio terms through actual listening.

Hope this helps. :)

Cheers.

Jadis,

I also admire Lani Misalucha's voice, so powerful that she can easily sing high notes without exerting any effort. I also have that CD, as well as her concert CD.

Cheers. :)

Newbie,

I recently bought the Chesky CD from Astroplus store at the Podium. I don't know if the Sheffield CD is still available as I bought mine years ago. You might want to check with Hypertriode or diskexchange or even Pican, they might still have them. I believe you can also place an order for this Sheffield CD from Tower records and AVDI.

Aside from the Sheffield Lab CD, you can also use Stereophile test CD Volumes 1 -3. Volume 1 has a test tones used for speaker alignment. I believe they're still available in music stores.

Cheers.

Some recent LPs I just got that are of merit:

Image

1. Thelma Houston-I've Got The Music in Me (Sheffield Lab D2D)

In all those years I passed on getting this one bec people told me it is noisy and full of screaming. Well, it is a bit of both, BUT sonically, it
is a spectacular album. This is not really not my kind of music but I
actually enjoyed every minute of this album. Wide, expansive soundstage
and great separation of instruments render all the loud notes pleasantly.
I can imagine if this was done in the ordinary type and not D2D, it might
be a big disaster. Am glad I got this before it's too late.

Image

2. The Music of Leroy Anderson Vol. 2 ( Mercury )

Long on the TAS list, finally got a non-crackle copy and boy, does
this album sing! The tango type cuts on this album is incredibly musical. I have been a fan of the Frederick Fennell because of the Telarc "Holst' album, and now I realize he was that great a conductor even long before his Telarc stint.

Image

3. Frederick Fennell conducts Gershwin ( Mercury)

Fabulously recorded Gershwin standards. Beautiful album.

4. Arriba- Edmundo Ros and his Orchestra (London Phase 4)

Got this on a throw-away price but I believe the music is worth
ten times its price. Good to discover music of the era when I was
not even aware of such music of the genre. The beat here is mostly
tango and cha-cha. Fantastic recording and content.
