Le Chateau de Jadis

Postby Hyperion » Thu Aug 19, 2004 2:19 am

Just came from Le Chateau de Jadis and I still have that euphoric feeling of a student coming home from a good lecture.

I don't know if it's his upgrades, or maybe my ears had been upgraded through the years but Jadis' system is sounding great and better than I remember it to be (which had been already ear-opening to begin with since it was the 1st time I heard a high end analog based system totally smother ALL digital based systems I've ever heard).

That time I became aware that analog is the way to go and digital still has a long ways to go. This time ... I've never heard Maggies sound so airy, clean and grainless, so lush and creamy, so warm and full ... nor have I ever encountered any Audio Research amplifier sounding so tonally colorful, so relaxed and effortlessly graceful. I am throwing out all my prejudices. I guess anything is possible with a master at the helm ...

What I heard was totally natural sounding, effortlessly airy and holographic, absolutely non-fatiguing and very musical, and I am sure the guys who were with me would agree.

Thanks for having us as guests Philip.

The first thing that i can mutter was P*&&#^(*@&#(*na!

This is what a SUPERSYSTEM is all about!!!!

Grabe! I had goosebumps all over me, the system conveyed PURE EMOTION! You ARE IN the music, IN THE performance. It is REAL, the drums, the sax, the piano, the singers, are exactly what i expect in a LIVE performance, brought to life by this system.

The system is so HOLOGRAPHIC, the choir is IN THERE! grabe!

And the TONE, the entire tone of the system is SO NATURAL, damn! I wanted to go home, sell all my gear and stick to headphones :(

Thanks jadis for the extreme experience last night. Simply astounding!

I can't help it - the combination of VPI HW19 (piano finish), Eminent Technology arm, and Koetsu cartridge was SUPER!

Dalawa na lang kailangan ko - VPI HW19 at Koetsu, hahahahaha, huhuhuhuhu...

My pleasure Hans. And I enjoyed all of your company.
My way of thinking in audio has evolved into a manner that I now
try to minimize and shrink the rules and myths to adapt to my own
listening bias. Basic knowlegde about electronics and speakers, etc
is important. After that, what I strive for is to tinker and test with
with speakers, placement and room conditions to suit my taste.
Perhaps the only rule that will not change for me is the grandiose
sound of tubes. That is my personal bias. Before I look for powerful,
rich, and deep bass. Slowly, that changed. I am now able to 'forgive'
the missing last octave and its weight in exchange for a fuller, lusher,
and warmer midrange. My ultimate test is how long I can listen to my
system before feeling fatigue. And my antidote to fatigue is to splurge
my system with tweaks and changes that will make music more emotional
and gripping. I want to be moved by the music. After setting that
goal, I guess the next thing is to go out and work for it. Thanks again
Hans, and the other guys for visiting. Maybe we can do it again soon,
have another set of LPs that I failed to play because of time constraint. :)

Thanks too, arnoldc, for visiting. I feel gratified when people
enjoy music the way I do. Our hobby is like an art form. It is subjective
rooted in a little objective principles. After that, we are set off to ride
in a magical flying carpet that knows no bounderies. I have some more
LPs to play for you guys next time..... :)

Funny that the guys couldn't stop grinning w/ envy at your marvelous record collection.

If you may, would you please share w/ us more info on that curious male acappella quartet w/c you heartily spun for us? I find it hard to get over that experience, even Francis couldn't help himself in singing along. And for a moment there, I honestly thought he was the fifth singer!

Thanks for the kind words, Racio. And I myself am gratified at
having ardent audiophiles visit and share with me my passion for music.
I couldn't stress more to fellow music lovers the importance of building
a good record or software collection. And the key is to get clean
LPs to boot to complete the kill. When I started my hunt, I would painfully
pay five times the cost of a sealed imported LP for a opened rare and
highly rated LP (ususally TAS rated ). I am able now to justify such
hideous price bec such LP has become a treasure. And if I divide the
cost to the number of years it gave me enjoyment and the number
of years to come that it will still provide me with such musical
pleasure, then the cost per year becomes virtually nil.

I will talk more in-depth about the LP of 'Brothers Four Sings
Lenon and McCarthy' in my 'Records and Recordings' section. And
my own experience last night was that I thought too that Francis
was humming of singing too as the FIFTH Brother.

i WAS really humming along...afterall i am their long lost brother. so last night was a reunion for Brothers 5! :)

thanks jadis. a truly wonderful evening. sorry we couldn't stay longer, but i'm glad i got there ahead of racio...otherwise i wouldn't get the 'first option' to own a B4 LP (one of your 3 or 4 copies). sorry racio. hehehe :P

"imaging kings, natural-sounding music machines" that's how i would describe your set-up...am glad we didn't play rock last night (sorry arnold) hahaha

*** Brothers FIVE!!! That's it. You know it's so different when I
listened to that track alone than with you 4 seated while I'm in the corner.
I really heard one voice from where you were seated, and I really
thought it was you, Francis. And you're right, you will get first crack
if I get more copies. And thanks too for coming, glad you enjoyed
the music.

And btw, Racio, I posted a more in-depth description of the
Brothers Four Beatles album in the Records and Recordings section.

arnoldc,

'Sealed' pa ang Time Warp LP ko... virgin price.

Seriously, I sold my own copy in the 90s but of late saw a sealed copy and I
couldn't resist getting it for its 'sentimental' value. I wanted to sell it at one point but
changed my mind. :)

The feeling is akin to owning a sealed cannister of plutonium. :)

Thanks to Philip for sparing us the time to listen to his setup which played (emphasis on played) music not sound.

The system was effortless as it presented a large, tonally correct rendition of whatever LP was played. I have heard other Maggie setups but this is by far the best.

It was also good chatting about LP's, tubes and other audio related matters. Philip's passion for audio really shows whenever he talks about his tube and LP collection.

Thanks Philip.

Hi Grant,

You are most definitely welcome. And thanks also for bringing and introducing me to
two more new music lovers. It is always a pleasure to share my love of music with fellow
hobbyists, and when this happens, I do not even feel the passage of time and would feel
that such gatherings to be so short. My own personal feeling with the Maggies, having lived
with it for 7 years without remorse nor regret, is that they project so much of the music
and let you forget about gears for a while. That is not to say that the Maggies do not need
'good' ancillary equipment. It probably is much easier than most things to tune once you get
the amp and cables right. And the last task would be its placement, as discussed in another
thread in the speaker forum. After that, I can say, it is all music, music, and music. And glad
that you enjoyed the night, and hope your friends do too.

jadis- Thank you very much for inviting me over to have a listen on your well-thought of and carefully prepared super system. Your Maggies can SING!

Everything an audiophile would want, you will find in his system: speakers doing a disappearing act, depth & width of soundstage, layering/spatial orientation of the musicians & instruments, openess and ease of presentation. I had a great time listening to your LP collection and exchanging thoughts about audio in general. I am sure others can learn a lot from you. I thoroughly enjoyed the audio session. Thanks again, Philip!

stereophile,

My pleasure in having you over and many thanks too for coming all the way down
south. I always enjoy having new people around for a thorough listening session and I am
glad you enjoyed the session. Our listening biases are quite alike and I am actually surprised
we had not met sooner on the past on audio stores or shows. I forward to repaying your visit
bec I have quite a fondness for the Quad ESLs particularly on the vocals and strings.

jadis- Drop me a line when you're in the area so you can have a listen. Now, I fully understand the posts of other WS members who have visited your hallowed audio room. It's one thing to read about it, but so much more to actually be there and hear the music flow.
