hi mael,

judging on the new logo, i believe it cannot be a long plate. it is later production, probably third generation.

The ring was really intended for octal tubes but I used them for my 'peanut' tubes too. As in any case, the result may vary from gear to gear so hands-on testing is a must.

Good :D I have solid brass rods in my junk which I can use :D Hmmmm... I'll try to make a set made of wood too

TUBE PORN 8) :D

While I have gone into a little hiatus as far as tube hunting is concerned, the passion for tubes is always there, and from time to time I 'review' some of the pics I have gathered in the so many years of tube appreciation through the net. These are the so called 'dream tubes' that can make my system sound liquid, and yes, 'wet'. 8)

If I have these packed goodies, I probably will store them in another room and sleep with them for a year or two. I do not need to use them.....yet. :D

Image

Who would want to rip off the 'seal' in these treasured goodies? The much sought after Telefunken ECC188, factory sealed. I'd sleep with them too as I tuck them in my bedside drawer. :D

Image

Wow, several stacked boxes of CV tubes made specially for the R.A.F. Unfortunately, I do not have enough firepower nor manpower to conduct a commando raid in this warehouse. At least some lives will be spared. :D I'd build a warehouse to house these 'raffies' if they would just land in my lap, or chimney. :D

Image

I thought this was some sort of control box for some missile launchers in the Cold War, but luckily this is just a Weston tube tester. I would love to own one someday, provided they supply me with a technician to get things going.

Image

I have a pair of dreams...

Image

And now, I have 2 pairs more to dream about... :D

Image

I was 'BI-ing' a friend to get this pair (the left one is still sealed!) a few years ago because the price was stratospheric for me, but apparently it was for him as well, so, they got sold to another tube lover. I was told that is batch is one of the oldest CCa made by Siemens. Today, I only have the picture to look at. ;(

Image

In the dream, someone uttered 'Buksan Mo Na!'! Opening a sealed Tele Cca??? Ang sarap niyan...When the time came that I had to pay, I woke up. Dream is over.

Hi Jadis,

I had the good fortune of bumping into a personal friend of Sid Smith who brought along his Sid Smith modified Marantz 7 preamp. He says his unit is special as it is the only unit that Sid Smith modified with a black face plate. This is one fantastic preamp! We inserted it into a system composed of the Spectral SDR 4000S cd player, Lamm ML 1.1 amps, and Magico V3 speakers. This is one very memorable sounding system. The soundstage was so big, the dynamics so wide, the resolution so high, the notes so in tune that I was totally surprised.

Hi Mullard,

Wow, I can imagine. I've heard great things about his modification works from RT and I hope one day I can actually hear a unit playing.

Nols,

If you mean available from my stash, none. (My stash had been all cleaned out long ago primarily by 'thy neighbor'). If you mean the net sources, there should be many to consider. BUT A BIG CAVEAT EMPTOR if you plan to buy there. Many fakes all around the web. Anyway, I will narrow down the tubes into those I actually have tried in my system. The Tele ECC188, the Mullard CV2492 (both have pics on the first few pages here), and the Amperex USN-CEP 7308 (US Navy). To quickly answer the Q, the Amperex is the most liquid. But to qualify a little, it is too liquid, even for me who love the liquid syrupy flavor, I got drowned in its overly thick flavor. But mind you, it is a VERY GOOD sounding tube, by any standards. I sold my troika to you-know-who but in retrospect, I should have kept them. Highs are a little rolled off in my system but I believe to a very top extended system it will work well. The midrange is to die for and maybe even to kill for. Capital L for LUSH, and LIQUID.

No, Jen. 7308 is 6922 or ECC 188. It is also applicable as 6DJ8 or ECC88 variants.
