R-Rated Denon

Postby mandym » Tue Oct 07, 2008 4:37 pm

Hooray!
Thanks to Uwe's excellent video on how to undress a Denon, Amandarae's encouragement and Sir VD's lending me his damaged Denon 103R as a Guinea pig...By George I've got it!
Here is the half-nude Denon clad only in boxer shorts. I have a feeling that nude cartridges have an advantage over enclosed ones in the area of sound coloration (material resonance, cavity resonance,??) but that remains to be heard. The semi-nude cartridge is a necessary compromise for the protection of the fragile signal wires.

The next step is for Sir Remus to retip it then tested/put back into service in Sir VD's gear.

Congrats mandym Excellent job. When I lost on bidding on your ebony body last year and I was so much Inspired by amandarae's exploits I had no choice but to get one from Uwe but this one even looks a lot better :inlove:

So when do you start taking orders?

I can offer my uwe body or the nuded denon to compare it with.

Additional info on the item:

*Holes are already threaded.
*The cartridge is epoxied onto the body. Press-fitting is not too reliable specially with wood that might crack due to strain or change dimension.
*The front part is a separate piece bonded to the main body. This leaves a lot of elbow room for aesthetic design. Our good man in Hong Kong is sending a piece of mammoth ivory for use as a front piece.
*I think I can take orders but I'd first want more practice in removing the casings.

Any other suggestions/ideas/theories the we can consider at this early stage?

My dream analog set-up would be a unipivot wooden tonearm and wood bodied cart handcrafted by sir mandy. it's like having your violin made by Antonio Stradivari! What a conversation piece!

Congratulations Sir Mandy and thanks for sharing your great ideas. Ang galing ng Pilipino!

Thank you all for the nice compliments. Actually, you support and enthusiasm keep me fired up in trying to produce good stuff.

Jack, the design looks great by accident! The shiny dark wood (on the front) and it's particular curvature gives it a nice retro/art deco look.

Jon, come over with your Denon and we will go through the steps of removing the plastic shell. Whoever wants to make "osyoso" are welcome too! This knowledge is free.

great work
:D
if you can source grenadilla wood which is a very hard, dark wood, almost black primarily used in musical instruments like clarinets, piccolos, etc that would be something :D

Hi mandym ,By any chance will the woodbody be re-usable just in case you want a new 103 instead of having the old one re-tipped?
