A 12-INCH PLEASURE

Postby mandym » Sat Jun 21, 2008 6:18 am

My latest pride and joy, a 12-inch tonearm made entirely of Kamagong from headshell to armpod.

I built this for my personal satisfaction; I am posting to encourage other tonearm DIYers to build their own ( does not apply to the Jon Agners and the Bridgebolts of the world who are already wonderfully inspired).

For brevity I am not going into too many details here (there is much more than meets the eye) but will be only too happy to answer questions if there be any.

I. In the beginning, a Kamagong unipivot!

The Kamagong pin

At the top of the post is the Kamagong cup

II. The turret

Image
The pin locks into the turret through a set screw. Adjustable, "resharpenable".

III. Arm mounted on armpod
Image
Notice the triangular Kamagong arm tube. Rigid against flexural and torsional stresses. The pod is loaded with lead, over 1 kilo total weight.

IV. In full dress

Ready for a hot date with Dante's 301!

sir... question....

un pin ba nakapatong lang sa bowl....nagbabalance lang

so it means you can easily remove the tonearm and replace it with another one?

what's the weight between the bowlpost and the din-plug? anti-skate counterweight? how do you adjust?

Halls, dami mo namang tanong

Yes. Easily to remove and exchange. This is a big bonus for unipivots aside from being easy to make. That is why all my tonearms are unipivots.

Yes the hanging weight provides the antiskating force. This one is about 6 grams. Adjustment is by changing the weight. Like VPI, I don't find it super critical specially on 12-inch arms with smaller offset angles.

This thing flies. With the Origin Live motor I have a feeling it's going to soar! I can't wait for the order to come in, please let me know the minute it comes.

Mandy, move to the UK, open a small workshop, stay in the UK just long enough to win the Queen's award for industry and then come back 8)

I try very hard to work with wood, but the results always look rough unless viewed from a few feet.

Can i be your marketing man? Please.
Here's a plan, offer a 50% discount to anyone that plants a tree, provide a list of tree types that produce the best tonearm and sell sustainable tonearms to the world.

Fantastic work :D :D :D :D

great job. would you consider increasing the mass/rigidity of the headshell? the headshell looks a bit light compared to the rest of the arm
