highly regulated 12vdc power plant

Postby vintage_dog » Thu May 07, 2009 12:37 am

i requested andrew to custom-build a 12vdc highly regulated/filtered power supply to replace the wal-wart ac-dc adapters that come with some digital audio gear.

my musical fidelity V-DAC came with such a wal-wart dc supply which when measured is some 15vdc instead of 12cdc.

what i got this evening was a heavy duty black box (about 2x the size and weight of the v-dac) rated at about 3x the current requirement of the v-dac and providing a stable 12vdc at 1mv ac noise. fantastic upgrade complete with a power supply plug, switch, led and heavy duty terminals...

the result? a more open and authoritative sound vs stock ps. am happy.

will do similar ps upgrades for my wadia idock, the t-amp and other 12vdc digital gear!

thanks andrew!

ok, i just powered my t-amp with this black box, and again, i get a cleaner, more open sound... :)

well, just shows you how bad those stock wal-wart dc converters are....

VD,

Congrats!

I heard the same when I went from wall warts to an X-PSU.

Will you be trying batteries?

Cheers!

yes, i have those too but got tired (am lazy) charging those (motorbike) batteries. :)

the v-psu (for the v-series gear) is not available yet and will cost some 2-3x more than having a similar psu made locally.

Did the batteries perform better ? Cleaner ?

qguy, i only used the batteries on the t-amp, and honestly, my aging ears couldn't detect much difference. i haven't tried the batt on the v-dac, but since i have the v-dac on 24x7, the blackbox is the more practical solution.

I use a switching power supply for my phono stage. As I understand, switching power supplies provides clean, low noise and constant voltage.

I can hear the difference against the the regular wall-wart adapters... quiete and more open.

How much boss? Got a V-DAC myself and the wall wart seems ok, but some reviews on the net say a better power supply will do wonders for the V-DAC.

Or you can go with raw brute power 20 amp 12V tranny with chokes.

Any well-built power supply will give so much benefit on any gears more so on audio equipment... remember any amplifier can only sound just as good as it's power supply... why don't you use a gel battery or any other batteries for that matter this is heaps better than anything - a pure DC supply.

I merely use two protocols to measure B+. One is to check ripple. Many off-the-shelf audio products rely on multiple feedbacks to tamp down ripple. (very recently, I scoped the power supply to the digital board of a well-known CDP. 30mV+ of ripple !!! as fed onto the V+ pin) Ideally, there should be a straight line. And two, check for stiffness. This is easy : connect a voltmeter across and observe the needle as you play music material. Ideally, the needle shouldn't move at all. If it sags and wiggles during transients, time to call Edrel ... :)

To achieve those goals, one may employ chokes and capacitors (expensive and requires much real estate), or regulate using SS or tubes. Or one goes to switched mode PS (which is all foreign to me) as in computers, and most DVD/CD players, etc ... It depends on power demand ... and more importantly, budget ... hehehe ... and one's "insanity" :D

Guys kahit anong ac wave pa yan it doesn't matter kasi once rectified it will come out in one direction only that's DC... the most important thing is that you must have a very stiff if possible ripple free DC output that can sustain any demanding load...

How about using something like this, a torroidal transformer?

Image

VA Rating 120VA
Input Voltage 230Vac
Output Voltage 2 x 12Vac
Output Current 5A
Regulation Typ. 10%
Weight 1.45kg
Dimensions L x W x H 52 (H) x 104 (Dia) mm
Temperature Rise 52°C

the transformers only step-down those voltages, still ac. the power plant i had made is for 12vdc output, so rectification/regulation is required. the ones andrew built already utilize toroidal transformers and chokes/caps for noise suppression, bridge rectifiers, ss regulators and more than sufficient filter caps.

can't wait for the ones being built for the wadia...
