Please share the best sound you got for the least amount of money :D

For me

B&W DM302, Yamaha Integrated na paylite from Abensons or somewhere, Abandoned Toshiba DVD player. The secret? Really cheap 12 guage spool wire that was so dull sounding the whole system ended up sounding expensive

Ah, that DM302. B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L. Kahit ano yatang "best buy" na entry level integrated babagay dun from Rotel, NAD, Marantz (sino pa merong Ken Ishiwata Signature?).

Another speaker like the DM-302 in its easy to match with easy on the wallet electronics is Tannoy. I had the Sixes series.

Sennheiser PX-100 is another one that got me grinning, note though, I've not seriously auditioned Grados.

Jack - The DM 302 is no pushover. It was voted Stereophile's Editors Choice during the 90's. A classic value for money speaker indeed for less than 10k. Got mine pre owned for 6k but sold it later.
The best sound for least money for me:
NAD 306 / KEF Coda 7
Pioneer A400X / Klipsch KG 3.2 :)

Btw, the 306 and the classic A400X are still with me

For me:

Technics SL-1200 Mk3 + NOS Technics SA-500 Receiver($125 from ebay). The receiver was made during the same time the SL-1200 first came out. Though there may be better integrateds out there now, the SA-500 provides you 50wpc, a built-in phono and a tuner :!: Add the vintage analog dial for tuning the radio stations and the toggle switch and you have a retro set-up back to the '70s :!: 8) The sonics for this vintage SS are very decent. Just pair with nice set of speakers like a pair of vintage ProAc tablettes(w/c my dad 'borrowed' ). Best way to start analog on the cheap :!:

TT - Denon - DP 29F (P7k)
Amp - NAD 304(P4k)
Speakers - Wharfedale 8.2 (P5.5k - used)
Speaker cables - 12 gauge (P25/meter)

Total Cost < P16k.
Sound = priceless

One of my cheapest set-up when I started audio is as follows:

1. Amp - Sonic Impact t-amp (stock) : Php2k
2. Speakers - B&W 303: Php 12k
3. Speaker cables - 12ga: Php50/meter by 4meters = Php200
4. Interconnect - Y-cable (mini to RCA) from Ace Hardware = Php250
5. Onkyo DVD/SACD player - Php18k
6. Speaker stand - Sabre brand - Php2k

Total: Php34,450 (5 years ago)

The key in the set-up is the T-amp which produced audiophile quality sound and the B&W 303 which was easy to drive. Vocals are very good with decent bass. Actually, if you substitute the Onkyo DVD player with cheaper ones at the price range from Php5k to Php8k then you would still reduced the overall investment.

Cheers :)

DIY EF86-EL84 parafeed - around 20K + labor (priceless)
DIY 12sn7 preamp - around 12K + labor
DIY "VIECH" speakers - 5.9K + labor
DIY flat ribbon speaker cables from a surplus inductor - 500pesos.
Denon CD player - 3.5K (used)

This setup beats my commercial tube amp and my commercial speakers!

When I started in vacuum tube audio:

Harman Kardon A224 Trio - P 6,000.00
Mission M70 Speakers - P 2,800.00
Sony CD Player - P 2,000.00
JVC Turntable - P 800.00

Total - P 11,600.00

That was my basic system, which up to now (expect for the CD player and turntable) still plays in our bedroom :D

I'm sure I have said it before, but I will again put in a good word for the Audio Technica CN5625AL (aka boytoy special) MM phono cartridge. This will work on the stock arms of most 70s-80s era direct drive turntables, which seem to be the entry level standard nowadays.

When properly set up, expect to hear the satisfying "smooth and full" sound that MM carts are known for, with just enough detail to get you hooked on the music format. This cart is also a decent tracker and quite tolerant of minor record warps. The built-in phono stages in many old integrated amps and stereo receivers will be compatible with it.

One day, of course, you will think of upgrading from this. It might take you a while, though, because you could end up spending P5,000 - P10,000 for the next step up. Our very own boytoy24 was selling these once upon a time for only P800!

i've long wanted this thread, pare, because in truth, most of my gear is bargain- basement baratillo procured. yes, i am cheap, to wit:

Heybrook HB1 speakers for only 2.5k (Golden Ear awardee for 3 straight years and i'm still kicking myself from the giddiness i feel because of the glorious sound these pair produces. thanx, Pirty :D )

Denon HA 1000 head amp + Fidelity Research MC 201 cart for only 9k (JAA, eat your heart out :D )

Luxman PD 300 with a Micro Seiki MA 505 arm for only 17k (up to this day, i'm still kicking myself for letting this go for the same price. should change my name from buboy to BOBO :( )...

...BUT next week, i'll be getting a PD300 for only 5k (God is really good :D )

Quadraflex stereo receiver + AR3a speakers for only 16k (dont have to explain the legendary AR3a, but that generic Quadraflex never fails to amaze me, specially when it drives those power-hungry ARs :D )
