Avatar's are back! (was Avatar suspension)

Postby mandym » Tue May 27, 2008 11:14 pm

Why is the use of avatars being suspended? Are they being misused?

I will miss Dante's super sexy and Troporobo's super funny avatars. Also the visual impact of Sinar's, Keith's as well!

I hope a solution for the problem is found.

I believe new standards especially regarding avatar SIZE will be set. I'm hoping avatar content will not be too strictly controlled. ;)

In my opinion though Tito Mandy there has been some misuse. Avatars are provided so we can have quick visual recognition of the poster. Recently however the avatar functions of the board have been used as punchlines to jokes hence giving members and moderators alike migraines as we try to follow what's going on. It is especially bothersome when it is some other member's face used. Talk about easy cases of mistaken identity. Anyhow I hope the avatar function is restored soon.

I think you have identified the problem. I was getting a bit confused with different individuals using the same avatar. Maybe a set of rules can be set up regarding use of avatars. I hope they get restored, they often give me valuable clues to their owner's personalities.

I fully agree with Jack as to mis-use of avatars. Avatars should only be used for easy ID. Guidelines should be made and I suggest that one of them would be that the avatar is audio related after all that is what this forum is all about.

Another mis-use that I've noticed recently is the use of LOCATION. We should honestly state where we are located, not necessarily a street address but at least the city / country.

I am responsible to the suspension of the Avatars.

I have proposed the following guidelines to Francis. It is up to him now to approve it.

Here are the proposed guidelines-

Out of courtesy to users with slow internet connections, Avatars should be no larger than 30kb in size, and they should fall within the range of 120 pixels wide and 120 pixels tall.

In addition, this will prevent the posts to be "distorted" by the use of big Avatars.

Other guidelines include:

- No flaming either by picture or text.
- No offensive or pornographic type images.
- No swearing.
- No advertising.
- No outside hyperlinks.
- No 'randomizer' or 'image rotator' type scripts (or links to them).

ps.

I also agree with the proper use of the Location. I changed mine.

i agree having some guidelines on avatars. i appreciate arnold taking time to initiate the 'clean-up and am fine with some of the suggested guidelines (size, no flames, etc).

my own personal view is that the avatar is your ID stamp. i don't mind what characters or images are used so long as they are in good state, not 'offensive'. am fine with dealers posting their products, am fine with folks posting shots of their toys, pets, cars, kids, girlfriends, idols, other images... heck, i want folks to be as creative as they can get with avatars. perhaps we can even have a contest on the most creative avatars! :-)

again, i agree with arnold, don't make them too big they occupy enough space and waste bandwidth.

i trust everyone will do their part in conforming to the guidelines and start cleaning their avatar soon....thanks amigos  that will keep our BPs low (BP for blood pressure! hehehe)

May I appeal for external hyperlink's WITHIN the prescribed size so animated .giffs can still be used?

Please? :)

Cong. JackD, physical size *and* file size, 120 x 120 pixels and not over 30K. May I know how can we guarantee it will be within limits?
