The Red Knot is a story of endurance & survival. Every year they fly from Tierra del Fuego, Argentina every spring to Southampton Island in the Canada Arctic for breeding. The total distance is almost 10,000 miles. Every year too, they replenish themselves in the Delaware Bay for the eggs of the Horseshoe Crab. This is to restore their weight & nourish themselves for the next leg of their journey. Every fall, they all migrate back to Tierra del Fuego to spend their winter months there, another 10,000 miles back.
The most famous of all the Red Knots is the one orange flagged B95 aka the "Moonbird". That bird is about 21 years old & was spotted last year in Reeds Beach, NJ. I haven't had reports of any of his sightings yet this year. Anyway, Moonbird has flown approximately 400,000 miles, a distance to the moon & halfway back. Hence, his monicker is "Moonbird". There is another one, flagged YY1 and is about 18 years old.
