I took the above image early in the morning with an ambient temperature of 33ºF just about freezing. Heard the knocking sound from the woods which I knew was coming from a woodpecker, I followed where it was coming from. I was rewarded with the sight of this handsome woodpecker.

The Woody Woodpecker cartoon character "shares many characteristics in common with the pileated woodpecker in terms of both physical appearance as well as his characteristic laugh, which resembles the call of the pileated woodpecker."

A rarity in MD. Rarely would this particular species visit Maryland. There has only been very few sightings of this Ross's Goose in the past few years.
All I can say is waking up very early, getting to Centennial Lake by 7:30 a.m., braving the 18ºF (-8ºC) temperature was all worth getting an image of this beautiful bird. The moment I saw this goose, I knew my day was made.
