i haven't heard current pcdp models, but panasonics seem to have the edge over sonys in terms of build quality.

if you're going to use your own phones, try them with the player you intend to buy. the head out of the player might not be able to drive your headphone.

sputnik, i haven't heard philips pdcps. but like the sonys, i'm not too impressed with their build quality. i read somewhere [sorry, but i can't remember where] that iriver pdcps sound good. try visiting the gadget shop near magoo's at park square. they used to have iriver portables.

for panasonic pdcp, try the shops along the row of phasetron, also in park square.

yes, a line out would be good as dogears suggested. but make sure that it is a true line out.

Go for the Panasonic. Mine is more than 9 years old and still works. This PCDP even has both the analog and optical line outs.

sputnik, if the country where the gear was manufactured matters to you, most panasonics available here are made in japan, while the sonys i have seen are made in malaysia, china, or any other asian country than japan.

for 2k, i think i saw a jvc pcdp costing about that much. it comes in a blister pack, and includes a headphone.

the iriver, by the way, i think is a korean company.

sputnik, form factor? then go for the panasonic. the ct-800 [i think] looks good, and it is slim. can't recall though if it has a tuner. over at avant, there is a panasonic that comes with a docking station that doubles as speakers.

yes may service center ang panasonic dito. i'm not sure though if they also service pcdps. ditto with sony. they might just suggest they buy a new one instead of having a defective unit repaired. but don't worry too much about it. i think pdcps are designed to withstand minor bumps.

i think the nextbase costs around 8k. watch a movie on an fx? might not be a good idea. best to keep toys out of sight in public. sa panahon ngayon, better not to take unnecessary chances.

sputnik, you might want to try the D-NE1 model of sony ganyan yun sakin, actually hindi sya lumabas dito sa local sony pero yun shop sa harap ng compex meron dun.. makikita mo sa window yun discman na may docking station na parang may aluminum finish un harap.. medyo mahina nga un output nya when driving headfones pero kaya naman yun px100 sagad nga lang volume but w/ arnCmoy ayos na ayos! meron sya optical out na hiwalay unlike un mga new models eh kasama na yun lineout sa mismong headphone plug... i can say that it's very slim at solid at elegante .. last friday i was at rockwell un appliance store sa malapit sa true value.. ang meron model dun D-NE520 or 720 ata slim sya parehong pareho sa D-NE1 pero kita mo na CHEAP PLASTIC ginamit pati yun buttons ang pangit.. yun mga D-NE20 at yun ibang recent model sa US eh slim daw pero pagmakita mo sa mga review eh may daya kasi may part sa likod na mataba para kasi sa battery na AA yun.. tsaka kung mahina yun sound output nun D-NE1 eh mas lalo na daw yun ngayon na mga digital amp ang gamit.. ...unlike D-NE1 or panasonic ct-800/810 eh gumstick battery ang gamit nya.. both have no radio tuner but mp3 capable.. i was about to get the ct800 before di ko lang tyoe yun mga control buttons nya may mga ilaw parang 80's disco hehe

Jay,

I think all Panasonic pdcps have a 10 second memory buffer. That's the reason why I switch to a Panasonic pcdp as my source for my car audio. Walang pinipili

sputnik, are you really bent on getting a portable cd player? mp3 players using flash memory are said to be virtually immune to skips. i forgot the model, but creative has a 1-gb version with tuner that sells for i think around 8k.
