HEADPHONES

Postby DY1VCN » Fri Feb 18, 2005 10:17 pm

Do you listen to music through headphones? I have found myself to be listening more and more to music through a pair of headphones using a portable music player. I have always found it more involving and enjoyable.

Headphones:
1. Sennheiser HD 212 Pro
2. Koss Porta Pro

Music Player:
1. Optimus CD Player-

What do you think?

headphone user here, albeit for a different reason. i find headphones a less expensive option to enjoy audio. besides, i don't have much space for a speaker-based set up.

there's another thread on headphones in the newbie corner. here's the link:
headphones/headphone systems for dummies

thanks.

Thanks for your reply. I checked out the link but the entries were quite old already. Anyway, if you are curious, I have tried in the last year no less than a dozen pairs of headphone units and I think that some of the best for portable use are the following:

1. Sennheiser 497
2. Sennheiser HD212 Pro (sealed)
2. Koss Porta Pro
3. Grado SR60

I would not get a more expensive pair of headphones if I would only be using it for a portable player for it would be a waste of money.

By the way, do you know who sells Grados here in the Philippines?

you know when i was a kid it was headphone-listening that turned me on to music. hours of listening to vinyl (sometimes up to 12 hours a day!) exposed me to all the emotions and the details. Never mind that I was listening to The Smiths and Japan. Up to know, listening to big setups (tube amps, hi-end loudspeakers, etc.,etc.) somehow pales in comparison to really getting in there via headphones. Padon me if I wax romantic, but listening to good speakers lets you think the band is right in front of you. But with headphones, it's like you're actually IN the band.

Right now I use those B&O headphones. Still, the earcup configuration is better, though, honestly, I don't know what to buy anymore. Tried (getting past my initial embarrassment) those Bose Triport ones, but like many people out there I'm a little wary of the whole Bose thing. I know this post is not useful at all, but I just wanted to share. THanks!

I like them a lot - I have long had Sennheiser HD500 at home and Sennheiser PX200 for travel. But the units that have really turned around my listening are a new set of Shure E2c earphones. Wow these things are great! (even Siegfried Linkwitz recommends them for perfectly flat response and east driving) If youthink MP3s or AppleAACsareg ood, try these and you'll soon find out that you need higher resolution on your portable. Now I wonder how much better a portable amp like the Airhead would be . . . its a never-ending path!

I have recently been toying around with headphones, mainly because I come home quite late and I don't want to disturb everybody in the house when I listen to music late at night. My headphone amp is the musical fidelity X-cans V3, and the source is an old but good sounding Sony CDP-228ESD. I started with an AKG K-55, which really sounded good and is definitely good value for money. However, through the help of arnoldc, I was able to get a Philips HP890, which, in my opinion, sounds better than the K-55. Deeper bass, better resolution, less sibilance. Very comfortable too! For 3K, definitely a best buy. Racio recommended to me the Audio Technica ATH-AD300, although I haven't had the chance to audition it.

i don't have a portable music player but i own Philips HP890 that i got for only P1,695. i use this now to listen to my CDs because my Harman Kardon HDCD player is not connected to my main system. sometimes i use my Toshiba Portege 7200 notebook as the source.

Nice list of cans. I got my old Joe Grado SR60 in HK 7 years ago in HK. I don't recall seein them here.
another one to add to the list though discontinued is the classic senheisser 414 headphones. Nice and lightweight for long listening sessions. Unfortunately the yellow foam rots after a couple of years and I just replaced them with generic black foam from radio shack.
for use with my G4 powerbook, i just bring the freebee 'phones from the ipod.

To Kier,

I am not affiliated with any group at the moment but whenever I do go on the air, I usually monitor 145.00 mhz. I usually used to hang out at 144.400 but I think they are not active anymore. My QTH is in Sampaloc, Manila and I sometimes join net calls early in the morning.

Seldom do I go on air nowadays for all I hear are kyawkyawans. I think 99% of those who go on air do not follow amateur procedures. i just keep my radios on hand, just in case.

Regards,
