Help regarding headphones

Hello Head-fi brothers, I need help for my nephew who is looking for headphones. Recommendations on models and where they can be purchased locally would be much appreciated.

Here are his basic requirements

He needs something portable so I guess that means sort of compact and has a good case.

He doesn't want IEMs, not comfortable daw, prefers on ear, close backed

He needs some isolation from the outside world because he says he'll use it for studying (he just passed the medical board <you da man James!> ) but does not want active isolation.

He likes clarity and some sweetness and is not a bass head. So much for my V-Moda crossfade recommendation

Sources will be his phone on the go or his MBP using a Geek Out 1000, given the phone I suppose we're looking for cans that are easy to drive.

Files are mostly MP3

Budget is around 10k

Thanks in advance guys!

My daughter is using Sol Republic Headphones :) this fits the requirement as described, and 'though it does not come with a case, this can be disassembled and will fit inside a small pouch. And it costs less than PhP 8K as I recall.

Headphones are very subjective to each user and it's good if he can fit it and hear it.\

Best to bring him to:

1. Egghead Audiohub - Robinson's Galleria (a lot of brands are available) It's a specialty store for headphiles

or

2. Digital Walker - Glorietta 2 or Alabang Town Center or Greenbelt

For clarity ..... Grado comes to mind .... not expensive (GR60e or GR80e) and easy to drive -- not too portable or foldable

For portability --- you have sony, audio technica, philips --- has foldable models

have been outside the headphone loop for quire a while, so i'm not updated on current offerings. senn px200 if still available. a bit tricky to position though to get maximum isolation.

i thinjk eric still carries grado. though i've read that grados are cheaper in other shops. you probably can negotiate, though.

+1 on bringing him to egghead. Let him try everything and choose which sounds sweetest to him. Tell him to bring his phone as a source.

As for my personal recommendations: they may be a bit large, but for very good passive isolation, more than enough sensitivity for laptops and phones, unhyped sound, and for under 10k I swear by my Senn HD380Pro. The pads and the entire cable assembly is user replaceable, which means they will keep going for many years. My daughter is equally happy with the Senn HD280Pro I handed down to her. It is almost 10 years old, has been through four ear pad changes, and still sounds as good as new. He could try the HD 25 series too. Similar virtues but in a smaller package.

Do ask him to have a day trip to Egghead chief. And do keep in mind that open headphones (like Grado) will leak sound.

I think the ATH-M50x will be in his budget (I can't recall the price at the moment), if not the lower-end version is almost as good.

I've never found Grados comfortable so that is another factor to consider.

Over at Lazada, there are several interesting choices:
Focal Spirit One is 8k
Senn HD518 8,800 pesos
AKG K142 7,000
Senn Momentum 9,600

Tell your nephew to demo a pair NAD ViSO HP50s. Interesting design technology. Works for me.
