Bye bye 160gb iPod classic. Hello what?

Postby rtsyrtsy » Mon Sep 15, 2014 9:07 am

So if you need a portable music player with giant storage, what options do eh have left given that. The iPod Classic has gone the way of het he dodo?

I used to use Sansa clips (great sound on flac + shure 535) and with today's large micro sd cards, perhaps that is an option.

I have been out of the audio touch for a bit so any insights would be most appreciated.

Cheers!

Astell & Kern perhaps. Top of the line is AK240 which has 256GB built-in memory and external memory of 128GB microSD

Only problem is the price

I am in the same boat... I am looking for something to drive my Audeze LCD-XC without additional amp

top of my list - HiFiMan HM901, followed by Calyx M.. was considering Astell & Kearn, looks good but the ones I auditioned did not impress me that much (lack dynamics).. those who compared said Calyx M wipes floor with them. Sound quality wise, those who owned the 3 are almost unanimous in proclaiming the 901 as best sonically.

I am very close in pulling the trigger on the HM901, unless a reasonably priced used (less than $1k) Altmann Tera Player shows up overnight. Tera Player is supposed to be the most natural sounding of all DAP, looks very basic with no touch screen and cost Euro 2,460.

when I say looks very basic, I mean this basic :D

The Light Harmonic looks like a good proposition too, but I don't know when it will come out

He-he, iPod Classic was what, usd300?

And here we are now taking over usd2k for a portable player. :-)

Seriously, i can get multiple iPod touches, one for each playlist and still spend less than one of these $$$ pdp's.

I am sure some of them will sound awesome though. Just too rich for my taste.

Are there alternatives in the same price range as the iPod Classic?

Just wait for the upcoming ipod touch it should have 128gb or even 256gb storage.

For those after absolute sonics in portable form, try looking at the Chord Hugo, have one and it is fantastic.

What DAP are you using with the Chord Hugo?

alam mo namang basta sa 'yo best of the best kaagad prescription ko :D

for casual listening and use, I think your best candidate is Ipod classic pa rin

what earphone/headphone are you using?

I am not a big fan of Ipod, I think more convenient to transfer files etc ang SD card based players, I could be wrong (not an Apple product regular user)

I have a 64 gb Ipod touch 3G with very minimal use (maybe 50 hours of use, maybe less) that I'd been trying to sell locally

ipod Classic > Cypher Labs CLASDB (DAC) > SPDIF cable > Hugo

Unfortunately Hugo does not have Apple license to decipher ipod's output, so I need that CLASDB device which is Apple licensed and takes the digital signal from the ipod and passes digital to Hugo. You can use ipod Touch or iphone or ipad with Apple CCK and directly connect to Hugo using USB.

Before I got the Hugo I tested so many portable amps in the $500 to $1,000 range mated with CLASDB as DAC (w/c is also outstanding) and nothing came close to Hugo.

I'm just glad to still have a 160 Gb Classic in great shape. I'd better order a replacement battery for it while they can still be found. I plan to keep it until they pry it from my cold dead hands.

I might have to do the same. Just out of curiosity I checked Amazon and eBay. Prices are already escalating, with some idiots asking buy-it-now prices north (even way north) of $500 for "RARE" units! Apple sold tens of millions of those things, and I am willing to bet that retailers and distributors have stranded stock of millions more
