Visit to a head-fi haven

As recommended by Claude and Ken, I visited Mingo during the holidays. For those who would like to go, here's what to expect.

Take the MTR to Mong Kok. Use the E2 exit. Upon exiting, go straight and turn right at the next corner. Even faster, there is a short cut through a bank. You'll see it right after the exit, on your right. There's a sign for Sai Cheung Choi St. You emerge from the bank and turn right. Look for the Good Hope Building on your right. No. 5. This is what the entrance looks like:

Image

There are elevators with uniformed local elderly gents to push the buttons for you. Get off at the 16th floor. The shop is near the end of the hallway. What to see there: lots and lots of headphones, all available for demo.

Image

And IEMs too - Westones, Ety, UE, you name it.

Image

Several Stax models too, both classic and current.

Image

Lots of headphone amps

Image

And various kinds of DACs.

Image

There are chairs to sit on while you sample the phones. A helpful English-speaking young lady is there to guide everyone. Bring lots of cash (credit card exchange rates can be dicey). Get yourself a lot of free time (or you can send the womenfolk to the nearby street markets). There's Kingsound, another shop, about 5 minutes away. But Mingo took up all my time already.

Happy trip!

Just a bump..........

Been reading some more reviews specially now that there are a lot of westone 3s being sold in headfi now that the initial hype is over.....

Someone pointed out that they also thought that this was the etys with bass, but it isn't. The etys are still more detailed. So I guess this one might not be for me. :( An apuresound cable upgrade for the etys might do it for me, in the not so far future. :)

There's this guy who reported a problem with his W3. Part of the cable start to unbraid as seen in the pic.

And guess what, Westone replies with an email asking him to send the unit back, and they will send a replacement. And to top it off, westone will cover shipping charges both ways. Excellent customer service :) :) :)

except for the UE3, i compared the shure, westone and senn unamped from my ipod just recently. all were priced roughly in the US$400 range. all were good, and of different sonic flavor. i ended up with the IE8 as i found it to be closest in character to my loudspeaker system. i think it will boil down to taste and there are no absolutes amongst these.

i also tried an iQube amp with the IE8 w/ pretty impressive results.

So how much did your IE-8 cost if you don't mind me asking? I know you only auditioned them for a short time, but anyway, can you give us your impressions regarding SQ, comfort, and the cables.

us$385, got it at a shop in singapore. the only iem's that i've used are those in this thread's list minus the UE, so can't really compare much.

comfort: they are great - i'm used to the senn px100 and i would say the ie8 is much more comfortable.
cables: imo simple, flexible and durable-looking. have not so far noticed any cable-related microphonics. i preferred the ie8 cables and overall build quality compared to the shure or westone. please note i use this mostly sitting down listening.
sound: really tough to describe, i would say it is like a significantly accomplished and refined version of a px100.

Ah thanks for your impressions. I wish we could also audition these IEMs locally :)
