DC Leakage or Spikes: Tube Pre on SS Amp

Postby egay » Mon Dec 29, 2008 7:30 pm

Hello All,
this had been bothering me and is actually giving me some anxiety.

i'm seeing some fateful event when suddenly this happens and burns the amp and the speakers, too :o

Krell specifically warns against the use of tube preamps for their amps because of DC "ek ek"; of course they provided a protection circuit (i.e. capacitor/s) in the input side BUT at the expense of some fidelity loss :-(

As far as i can understand, ALL preamps (SS or Tube) can produce DC leakage - am i correct?

Can you please clarify/elaborate on this "issue"?

i believe that the Preamp is the CENTER/HEART of a system, and that a Tube Pre would provide the SQ i want with a formidable SS amp like the Krell (or Jeff Rowland), i always thought of mixing them together - but knowing now of this DC leakage issue really bothers me.

Please help.

Thanks!
