Power Up & Power Down Routine

Postby dimfer » Tue Mar 04, 2008 9:49 am

what's the correct power up/power down procedure or sequence for:

1. tube amp - tube pre-amp - tube phono pre-amp

2. tube amp - tube pre-amp - tube cdp - tube dac

3. tube pre-amp - ss amp - ss phono

4. tube pre-amp - ss amp - ss cdp - ss dac

what's ideal warm up time for each equipment

is there also sequence/precudure followed for video equipments or digital processors?

for me...

1) turn on voltage regulator
2) turn on line conditioner
3) turn on sources
4) turn on pre-amp
5) turn on power amp (for my CJ, 1-minute warm up time, when i turn on it is on "standby" mode, if it's ready, it "clicks")

for turning off, just reverse the process, hope this helps, thanks! :D

in my vtl manual it says turn on the source equipment first then finally the amps. for turning off the first thing should be the amp and the last are the source equipment

power up:

1. all source components (cd player, dac, phono pre, etc) 1st in no particular order

2. pre amp

3. power amp

power down:

reverse the order

same here.

When using tube gear make sure that the soft switching of the preamp will outrace that of the power amps ;)

Irritating pops heard at the loudspeaker caused by some sort of surge. Modern loudspeakers are unlikely to be damaged but in the old days it was not uncommon to burn a voicecoil or two. :D

Turn on the Nuclear Reactor
Engage Atom Molecule converter
Enable Energy Transfer generator
Engage DC-AC-DC -AC power converters

and last but not the least...
Press Play on Konka DVD Player

Seriously Turn off power amp to source then reverse for turning on..

my Cayin amp has a "forced" 30 second warm up time.. so no issues with the order as long as I turn on all equipment within the 30 second warm up time

hmm, still sounds dangerous to me (a loud THUD! or POP! sounds dangerous to me :$ )
i'd feel better to wait for the soft-start to kick in before the next equipment

i used to have my turntable motor rotating and my digital system on "hot-mode" 24/7/365, but after the digital and the first motor of the TT gave in i re-evaluated my position and decided just to lead a normal life: so it is -

- power line support system
- sources, always minding the soft starts
- amp/s
- turning-off is reversed
