Need help. What do you call the fluid that helps slow down the movement of the arm lifter so that it helps land the stylus gently on a record? An ideas where to buy this?

Some tonearm lifters are hydraulic in nature. The oil(some use silicon oil) is supplied with the arm. Others are not. What tonearm are you using?

Thanks for the reply.

I'm using an SME 3012. I will also need some for my thorens TP 16 arm.

Hypertriode and I have been puzzling about what kind of silicon oil and what viscousity to use. We are also trying to find out where to source this.

Thanks again!

You can buy some silicon oil of varying viscosities from hobby (rc) shops. Try the one in park square 1. They don't have the thickest though.

You can also get it online here:

Got some from RC hobby shop in mega mall basement under the supermarket side. It seems the thickes is the one to use.

SME sells their own OEM silicon damping oil.

Suggest consult or bring your tonearm to set-up2. He has worked out sme tone arm lifters back to a smooth arm lift movement.
