I don't think sound travels in a (near) vacuum...I don't know, my physics teacher was Ms. Rosal at Ateneo High. Did anyone else on the board ever had this rare opportunity? :wink:

Hey Jack didn't we have her as well in 1st year? Good old Ms. Rosal... Sound waves cannot travel in a vacuum as I recall. I always thought 85db was conversational SPL. Didn't realize it is the threshold of hearing damage. BTW, do these measures have anything to do with frequency?

She had me suspended for smoking :evil: I remember it was Father Lucas that got Marty E on the very same charge :lol:

I dunno about the frequency. But we do perceive different frequencies in varying dBs as related to SPL. The Fletcher-Munson curve as developed by bell is an approximation but each individual differs.

As for the 85dB part. It is a common misconception. Playback systems are calibrated using Pink Noise at 85dB. It is not the average listening level.

you're right. it's like a movie trailer (forget what movie though): "in space no one can hear you scream" :shock: :lol:

sound needs to propagate through a medium - air or water. i'm just wondering though that if those shock waves were to hit earth... :)
