The VR-4 jr

Postby JackD201 » Sat Aug 20, 2005 5:41 pm

This is one of our best selling models in the Philippines and for VSA world wide.

It has been regarded by many of the experts as one of the best speakers in its price range. Robert Harley categorically called it the best mid-priced speaker. Sue Kraft compares it with speakers in the $10,000 range.

What you may not know is that it is one of the loudspeakers most chosen by electronics manufacturers to display and show off their products in shows.

These include such big names as VAC, DK, Moscode, and Granite Audio and others of which only VAC and DK were official show partners.

Here is an excerpt from Granite Audio's Website.

We debuted our newest Model #864SR tube power amps at CES 2005 and wanted to feature their great sound with great speakers other than our own Granite Audio speakers in one of our two listening rooms. Since there were four other exhibitors also showing the VR4jr's with different electronics , our listeners could better evaluate the sonic performance of our all tube Granite Audio electronics. The VR4jr's were an easy choice for us because of their quality construction, good sound, and great value of cost vs. performance.

Many CES 2005 visitors went to all five rooms with the VR4jr's and reported back that Granite Audio "has the sound". Everyone we heard back from agreed that we made the VR4jr's sound the best. Of course Albert was also quite pleased to hear this and made many trips to our exhibit to compare our performance with his quality made VR4jr's. Yes, you can expect to see VonSchweikert speakers again in the 2006 Granite Audio exhibit.

How many hours have you put in on this pair, Jack? My 4Jrs are logging close to 300 hours now and they are singing beautifully! I am tube rolling my Unison Research Unico Pre pre-amp with Brimar 12AU7s (1961), Radiotechnique 12AU7WA (1965) and CBS/Hytron 5814A (1956). These speakers are so revealing that it sounds like I am listening to very different speakers with each tube change. And these tubes rock! They sing and rock! :)
I can't wait to get my upsampler module from Kevin Deal. The Njoe Tjoeb Super 4000 is here! :D

Hi Dante, I love your pedo-inspiring Renee Olstead avatar! RG's jrs have about 175 hours of high SPL break-in time already. The last pair just started so It's got only 10 hours at best.

Yup, the SRs are the same way different amp = different sounding speaker from ultra dynamic to super lambing.

Sarap no?

Looking forward to visiting you soon for your check-up. ;)

The avatar was suggested by Killer Mike. I would have posted my souvenir shot with my model, but that might get me banned from WS. :) I'll let you know when the Njoe Tjoeb is set up so you can hear how it sounds with the jrs.

Nice pic, by the way. Naka-tripod na? :)

I know what you mean dante, I've been rolling the tubes of my ARC LS16 (all 6922s) as well. Thanks to VD and xinesys for the tubes. I first tried the Telefunkens then got a pair of Mullards. The stock valvos are already excellent for me. The valvos are very quick and pretty neutral. With the Teles plus the Mullards, much warmer which I like as well. :) I've honestly lost track of how long I've been using my 4jrs. My guess is maybe 350 hours but, the last 2 months or so have been low volume listening, so that's not really good burn in time.

vr4jr's

Postby rossifumi46 » Fri Oct 07, 2005 9:38 pm

had a brief listen to dante's vr4jr's when i delivered my buttercakes (shameless plug) hehehe

well what struck most me most was the smooth highs and transparent presentation... it seems the speakers can do all kinds music well, musical yet fast transients...
vocals of diana krall are oh so seductive and sultry...

Some added info :)

2005 Editor's Choice Award by The Absolute Sound (TAS)
2005 Publisher's Choice awarded by Stereo Times
2004 Writers' Choice awarded by Positive Feedback Online

"This loudspeaker is going to hit the high-end like an earthquake and send shock waves up toward the $20K range" -- EnjoytheMusic.com

"If in the end, all that really matters is the sound, then the VR-4jr is undeniably a winner...I found the VR-4jr to be a fun and musical mid-size speaker, easily capable of running with the big dogs when it comes to midrange openness and bass reproduction." -- The Absolute Sound (TAS)

"It offers excellent imaging and pinpoint soundstaging. Dimensionality and presence are there in spades whether the electronics were solid state or tubes. Its build quality and musical performance clearly place it at or near the top of its class" -- Stereo Times

"They are capable of playing loud with great weight and authority, while maintaining incredible balance across the frequency spectrum." -- Postive Feedback Online

"They offer a level of musical enchantment that is very often unobtainable from speakers selling for five times as much." -- Postive Feedback Online

"I am rewarded with an improved and now impressive bass response, sans subwoofers, and a faster, clearer presentation of the music." -- Members from Audio Asylum

"VRjr4 speakers pull a fantastic disappearing act and despite their moderate size pump out prodigious bass--they are -2db at 23 Hz." -- Members from AudioCircle

Did anyone else ever notice that in all these years Stereophile hasn't given VSR and VSA a review? All that will change in 2006 so we hear. :)
