Thanks! The L20t is a true bookshelf not needing critical placement. Very good for easy listening and the Arcam as well.

How about something like this? Is there any available locally. I could run this through my V-DAC then into my Pre-amp. At least the input to the preamp will be analog.

I haven't seen any like this locally. But I guess one can be fabricated, as long as you know which wires to connect together. It may take some experimenting, though.

The coupler is a possibility. You can find it in CDR King. Just use the cable of the iPod.

Yes, that's what I will do for the meantime. I will ask my trusty tech to do a DIY later on with some gold plated LOD and USB connectors on a belden wire that will suit this type of connection. ;)

This may or may not work -- whatever is on the other side of the 30-pin connector has to be licensed by Apple to read an iPod.

Just a thought:

Why need to connect the iPod to a DAC? The dock utilizes the iPod built-in DAC and therefore the output is analog and not digital, if my information is correct. So what you intend to do will look something like this:

iPod (analog) ---> vDAC (also analog output) ---> preamp (analog output).

I may be wrong, but if you want to override the iPod's DAC, then you need to place an ADC between the iPod and the vDAC.

Besides, reviews say that the iPod's DAC is quite good.

I have tested the iPod hooked directly to the pre-amp using a Cardas RCA hooked to the earphone out and it sounded bad. I haven't tested it using the LOD to RCA connection though... I just wanted to bring it up a notch and make it pass through a DAC to see the difference. I'll try it out and give a feedback soon if I get my hands on this female Type A USB to Type B USB converter.

Just playing around I guess... :)

Ipod --- dock connector ---- DAC -----pre-amp. There are DACs (not all) that can override the Ipod DAC. Headphone connector will not override the Ipod DAC.

I've posted about this before because the newer iPod and iPhone models are driving me nuts. They've eliminated the 'puwede-na' DAC that has audio outputs at the 30-pin connector and gone for a purely digital output ('Lightning'), so it's the adaptor that contains a small DAC (Wolfson WM8533) and a Cirrus Logic Audio decoder.

I understand that one of the best ways of bypassing the DAC on the newer iPod and iPhone is the little Astell & Kern AK10, though I haven't tried it myself.

I connect my iPod to my amplifier using the dock I purchased from CDR King, then soldered RCA plugs to the other end instead of the provided 3.5 mm stereo plug. Works fine for me. Easy to do pa.

Got the LOD 30 pin to RCA (gold plated) and testing it now. All I can say is wow, volume is controlled by amp so no need to crank up the iPod volume which distorts the sound …… here are some pics of the LOD
