Question is: "can your present system play those files?" Chances are they could be downward-compatible which defeats the purpose of getting the 24-bit in the first place.

so start saving for your next upgrade

Once music labels are in agreement, you can bet Apple will develop devices that can play them. I hope they go all out on this one.

well, actually THIS IS already in progress as we speak.
and the likes of Behold, Wadia, Linn, and other top-shelf digital providers actually have the capabilities NOW; and 24-bit Masters are already available.

my comment was simply with respect to what equipment we have at the moment :$ , apologies for the confusion (if any).

No confusion. I got you the first time. I just digressed a bit because I was excited with the direction Apple is taking.

Get ready to buy bigger drives. These files take up a lot of space.

I'm kinda sceptical. If they can even get their music up to CD standard I'd download all my music from iTunes, but I don't see it happening this year or the next.

It is definitely doable. Quicktime and Core Audio already have Hi-Rez audio capability now. It's just a matter of first getting iTunes fitted for playback and second and more important the amount they will charge vis-a-vis the size of the market actually interested. Now here's a twist. Even if the market is small, the migration will be a factor in computer sales. Just as gaming, photo and video pushed the RAM and Drive requirements higher and higher, Hi-Rez will do the same for the latter. It also opens repurchases of songs already bought. If I were apple I would definitely do it and do it soon before the likes of HD Tracks gets a real foothold.

Yep, I have a Tristan und Isolde 24/192 converted to Apple Lossless: 2.18 GB for a single album!
