Through the toslink or SPDIF digital output of the DVD player. Be careful you do not play a dvd with 5.1 into your DAC. There are cases where DACs have been fried this way.

Ah OK. I have an old Rotel RCD-951 (HDCD) with both toslink and RCA digital outputs. I prefer the latter since I've always found the toslink output to be too "sharp-sounding". Now I want to improve on the CDP by installing a good DAC. I find the 951's transport to be very robust so this is the plan. Any suggestions for a good DAC which sounds more on the tubey side?

Thanks.

the old MF X-24k is my favorite. I haven't been playing with DACs for a while. The headphones guys are the ones who are always seem to get their hands on the coolest affordable stuff. I'm sure they'll chime in. :)

I'm thinking of the Cambridge Magic DAC. Are they available locally?

Thanks but I'd like to go to the separate transport/DAC route for maximum flexibility. The DAC Magic is in my crosshairs for now. Very affordable compared to the Benchmark series...

Hi. How is this (the connections) done with a generic CD player? Thanks.

Most CD players have a black RCA output jack in the back marked digital or S/PDIF. You might also find a black protrusion which is the cover for the optical output. Any of these will do to connect it with the external DAC.

I'd say it's about the same. Maybe very slightly more than the local prices. So it might be worth it if there are no stocks here.

Thanks. I figured so. I currently use my digital RCA output to directly link an old Pioneer CD burner.
