Playstation as CD Player

I have been reading about Sony Playstation as CD Player. Three weeks ago I had a chance to purchase a Sony Playstation SCPH 1001 in a Thrift Store for $9.00. I am using an Acoustic Research Performance Series cable with it connected to my Marantz Integrated Amp P84D QuarterA and Vandersteen 2CE. I am listening to it now playing Pink Floyd DSOTM Capitol CDP 7 46001 2. I am quite impressed with its sound quality. It is full and expansive although I have to crank it up a to higher volume compared to my Sony SACD 555es player and some DVD players I have used on my system. It is detailed and balanced no overbearing highs and although not giving enough low bass, to me it is just right. Next I played Freeway Philharmonic, Sonic Detour Sheffield Lab 10050-2-F. The separations and the detail and the clearness of how each instruments are presented is remarkable. I am not really an audiophile but I like and I am enjoying what I am hearing. WOW!!!

Hey, congratulations Patbong!
You're among the 'select' people who had 'discovered' the PS's nack for playing music, too.

So are you saying you like it 'better' than your Sony SACD?
that's something remarkable, then ;)

enjoy!

Thank you egay, Well my Sony SACD Player 555es is connected to my other second system, I have not A-B them yet but with regards to playing CDs they are pretty close considering the price difference. The satisfaction i get from listening to it is great. Its cheap replacement for a dedicated CD player compared to a DVD player. Thank you for the input. Hope I could have it tweak (moded) someday.

Is this only true for the PS1 or is this also true for the PS2?
Just curious as it's the PS2 I have... thanks.

Nes,

I think that's the PS1 :?: There was already a discussion on this somewhere, started by JackD. :)

I believe this is true only with the PS 1 as it was reviewed by somebody in Stereophile magazine and is a class C recommended Cd player by the same mag. BUT the PS 2 may give some decent sonics too. Its just that no one has taken note of that yet.

Japan surplus is found on the 2nd floor of Pritil Market. I think I saw about 3 units there.
I would buy one for myself if not for the lack of RCAaudio jacks.

i think the difference why the PS1 was even considered as a CDP was the version that came out with RCA outputs.

I still have PS1 of my kids, but it doesn't have RCA outputs.

Also, if I'm going to play cds, I need to use the screen of my TV monitor to access the play, stop, forward, next buttons etc....

Can anybody assist me to simplify the playback?

See Stereophile review. It has an illustration how to operate the PS1 using the controller

That is right you have to be coneccted to a monitor or a TV to navigate. But on my case I listen to all tracks everytime I load a CD so that is not a problem for me. And I agree that that is one disadvantage to the Playstation used as CD. Thank you.

I think for that price buy it. The cord that it needs is just a regular cord for boom boxes or regular cassette players. As for the controller any PS one or two will work. You can even use the cordless type. For mine I am using the old controller.

It is the PS one with RCA jacks at the back. That I am using.

one thing I wish though is that it came out with optical output. its a really solid transport, heck it works topside down. i foolishly tried that trick to get my old sony cdp to play a CD-R (this was 1999, ok?) and i ended up loosening the spindle even more.
