Removing enclosure

Postby qguy » Thu Mar 03, 2005 10:56 am

Guys what happens if you have a 3 way loudspeaker and you remove the 1 inch tweets and 4.5 inch mid range driver and install them in an flat MDF parang OB...the size of the MDF would be just 1 inch larger than the diameter of the mids range..so the MDF would be about 5.5 inches...

Should I worry about the tweeters performance since the driver itself is totally covered ?

I am much more worried about the sound of the mids since its similar in design to most woofers where you see the cone from behind...

You might be wondering why I am planning to do this... aesthetic reasons...

Depends. There are tweeters and midrange drivers that sound better in an enclosed box than mounted on an OB, and vice-versa Why don't you go ahead and experiment?

Cheers.

front and back waves might cancel out each other - what with your 4.5 in. driver installed in a 5.5 in OB.

qguy,

Installing an open backed driver designed/tuned for sealed enclosures will loose it's efficiency but it will make the Q and slope more natural and reduce peaks.

If designated midrange/midwoofer need not generate upper bass (200 - 80 Hz....I think). Yes you can get away not providing the enclosure.

My suggestion?

Mount the midrange/midwoofer slightly off-center to minimize front and rear soundwaves cancellation.

Or extend add "wings" to one side of baffle.

Having two different distance and /or radius from center of driver/midrange/midwoofer "sees" two different acoustics.

Also beneficial if you mounted it more than two thirds the height of the baffle.
