Marty, baka kailangan mo ng horns?

I think it is better to have the flexibility of attenuating the tweeter. IMO lang, go for more sensitivity/efficiency over your woofer.....sayang ang gastos pag di sumabay yung tweeter.

I haven't seen what horns look like atop an open baffle. Maybe bullet muna or something plug and play. This is an experiment for me and I'd prefer to keep the costs down. If I see potential, maybe then i can go all in on the project. thanks Arn, JE!

Does the tweeter sensitivity and impedance have to match the coax driver?

Marty, as Joseph posted, it gives comfort in having them more sensitive (efficient) than the coax, as you can attenuate them. If less, there's nothing more to attenuate. Having the same impedance will be easier to design a cross over. Otherwise, look at your crossover and it will tell you what impedance it can take.

T-marts, If air is what you're after and not sparkle, I'll lend you a Townshend Maximum Super tweeter, adjustable and good to match with speakers over 100dB/1w/1m. Comes with an ESL bracket that should fix easily on an OB without damaging either. FR is 20khz to 100kHz. Problema lang pang all in nga ang presyo. Still we sell it for 30% less than US retail 8). Another thing is the magnets are mean. Take your watch off when handling them.

At times some ordinary piezo tweeter might go well with them OB. No I did not use the Crown or Daichi but who knows you might not hear the difference from the expensive ones. I use some of my old Coral pietzo .... not bad. Nag sizzle daw ang pietzo. So are some of the expensive ones. Akala ko nga panget, may mga ok din palang piezo. Have them blind tested by friends baka maintrigue ka pa..... at sabihing mong giant killer!!! At times when I go crazy I put 3 Coral tweeters per channel. one facing the rear another front and another sa side. Hindi na beamy ang tapon ng HF. Ok din lumawak ang tunog. Depende talaga sa design objectives mo rin. I learned not get stuck with in the box mentality. At times exploring what others don't dare is part of the joy of this hobby. May pros and cons din with multi tweeters but it's a joy ride. Now......... I can get these ribbons as tweeters will it sound good for my OB kaya? :^)

Good thing this 5-year old thread was revived. I'm also experimenting with my 403As in an ob. I added a Magnavox horn tweeter with a borrowed clarity cap 1 uf at first, with good results, though, I settled for a mundorf mcap .82 uf in the end. I'm now waiting for a pair of pioneer pt-205 horn tweeters to experiment on.

The OBs have more depth compared to boxed speakers I've done, kaso bitin sa lf. Will I get better bottom end if I position the drivers closer to the floor? I made these out of curiosity without looking at ob designs. Wala lang kasi ako magawa that day - the finish shows it too:D. I tried the jensen pr-15s also (pic on the left corner) pero tunog lata. Baka for woofer duties lang mga 'to talaga.

Please do tell us what's your impressions. I have some old pioneers too. But if you want to go cheapy (though I haven't find the time yet to buy them yet) they have these Pioneer PT6 (popular in the days of old) imitations at Deeco. I don't think there's so much difference except for the new way to manufacture them. I am sure the mold to cast them is the same. Whether they follow the specs of old or if they improved on them it's worth a try. Where can you find a hobby where you spent only a few hundreds and might get some hundred of hours of music joy. I saw some bullet horn also that are being sold in parts express at 2 to 3 times cheaper the price here. They are worth a try also. What's more interesting blind AB them with your more expensive, more bragging rights tweeters with your friends. It MIGHT surprise you. And I mean BLIND AB-ing .

Try getting some MDF and put the jensens in them and use them as bass OB ( make baffle wider than what you have). Try getting a lot a caps of different value and try them one by one together with your existing OB as a two or three way (depends if the tweeters are also used) and you have the whole year to play around with which will make your wife also happy because you are always home. Though there is a possibility she might hate the idea of another baffle in the house. Hazards of an exploring audiophile. LOL.

tony, i have 1pc. daiichi pt-6. kunin mo pag nagkita tayo. sounds ok depending on cap used (1uf seems best). alala ko lang sa original pioneer pt6 ay yung napakinggang ko sa harap ng jeep with raon/electrolytic 2.2uf/50v caps, at driven by the famous kp500? de-pihit 20wpc pioneer receiver. pag di narindi tenga mo sa kalansing, yung iba ginamitan pa ng 4.7uf cap jejeje

I tried using two vintage Coral (I got several more in stock somewhere) to increase the sound level in the HF. As they say the older you get specially male species like us the more you loose your hearing ability to hear HF notes. No wonder, there are some guys who needs increase HF level to enjoy. If I am not mistaken our ears started to go at age 30. And we start blaming the drivers rather than our ears. Hehehe.
LOL. I also had the experience ridding on the jeep and observed those jeeps really have kilansing (in a distorted way and not ideally soothing to the ears) only to find out that if I were in the driver seat you don't get to hear that much kilansing!!! Nor the bass!!! Or even anything decent. Take note he needs to be aware of the "para" and "ito po ang bayad" or "mama sukli ko" With all the noise out there and the speaker position was more for the passenger rather than the driver, the driver has no choice but to turn it up to his satisfaction but to the lost of the eardrums of the passengers. Ideally dapat isang set of speakers position para sa driver tapos another set of speakers sa mga pasahero. Assuming they tamed the speakers kasi ang ginagawa nila gaya gaya lang ng crossover circuit. Audiophile Jeep!
That experience made we aware to set up(tone and balance control) the sound system in my car if i have passengers. Try listening to the music as a passenger you'll see or hear what I mean.
Any way try the Pioneer imitation ojofool is offering. If its a piezo its not imitation that is it, Motorola made in whatever country. Try taming it or use two pairs baka ma mellow down the harsness and if it won't work try out different pairs of different brand. It's all part of the hobby. ENJOY!
