I was testing a pair of horns for my 406-8Y on the 614 cabinets but one of them was distorted. I returned them to the source and was hoping it can be revived and I got the text message today that they're alive and well :)

Will post pics of my updated 614 soon.

Hi Arnold,

Maybe the heading for this forum can be altered to something like - "OBs and Horns" :)

Once a horny- forever you will be!

Postby setup6 » Tue Jan 18, 2005 1:15 pm

Once one- always will be. That is what the Avante Garde guy I met in a show told me.

That is also where I am now. Currently, I am using my altec 419/614 cabs and i rest a horn on top of it. The JELabs site has pictures of it. The horn I am using is a fostex ft600 i ripped from an old fostex speaker. Alternately, I also have another fully horn-loaded speaker that i am tweaking with my altec 511s. I dream but cannot afford nor have space for an altec A7 [at least for now].

Congratulations on the horny route. It is not one that is popularly taken- well neither is SET.

I would not be surprised if you stay as one though.

arnold-

Currently trying to fit k-55 drivers with the 511 using adaptors. These 511s are huge- they barely extend the width of the 614cabs.

i think john is using an 811 which is smaller. The 511 is approx 24"W x 11"H x 18"D. the 811 is 18 x 8 x 13. the 511 is 18 lbs [without compression driver] and the 811 is 9 lbs. when i bidded for this, i thought i won the smaller 811. when the package got to me, i was shocked!

Nilo,

All the while, I thought you got the 511 horns because you saw them in my house... :)

The 511 seems to be just the right size for the OBs... The 811 matches the 614 cabinet just right as used by JE...

I think the 511 horns will be better partnered with the 612 cabinets which are 25 1/2" wide... a new cabinet project for you... but you will need a 15" woofer...

Regards.

When i saw those 511s in your place I was smiling on the way home picturing how my wife would react if i bought those monstrosities.

Natuloy nga. And you know what? Monstrosities they are not- as the music it creates has never been so involving. Almost, but not as present as yours, but getting there.

arnoldc,

Have you tried adding "wingettes" on your OB's.

Medyo me "curved" ba?

To reduce cancellation between the front and back soundwaves. I think.....?

here is my Altec 614 cabinet with Altec 406-8Y driver and Oxford horn :)

Image

These horns are not as extended as the Fostex super tweeters but for now they serve the purpose - top end that is smooth.

I used a 5uF oil capacitor and just allow the 406-8Y to roll off on it's own.

Tony M asked me to post his Horns :)

Image

"The first picture shows a midhorn (alnico jensen?, this was taken from a vintage juke box) gift from a friend, on top of my 614 cab. On the picture you'll see an asc 15uf can oil cap on a Lpad that I am still still tweaking."

Image

"the second picture is a 614 cab with screen remove, showing the duplex Altec 601C (12") standing on a diy sand boxes. The jensen horn adds more presence and is cross at 1.2khz while the small horn of 601C takes over at 10khz. The whole system is still a two way 1st order diy crossover. I did not use the stock altec crossover."

Image

"A picture of my entire diy setup (for this qtr?)- basis & pioneer tt's (restored by John), 3000b/10y amp, line & phono amps, voight pipe with Altec 409-8y attached to my vintage fisher x-100, all thanks to John. I presently use an RB300 with a denon 103R cart with my basis tt and audio technica AT-3H (mc) cart on my pioneer table."
