Joel,

Would you like to share details of your crossover? X'over frequency point, L-pad attenuation and the process? I think it would help potential horn users to get an idea of how to blend a horn properly to a bass driver.

Regards,

JE

My OB 8" drivers:
Altec 755A, 755C and 755E
Pioneer PIM8L/Lafayette SK98
Jensen P8RL/RX with RP103 or P35 tweeters

Except for the 755A I find the "judicious" use of a super tweeter helpful in supplementing the extreme HF like an Altec 3000, EV T35, Jensen RP103 or P35, Pioneer PT3K and Fostex FT17H crossed between 7K-10K with a paper or paper in oil cap and variable L-pad.

The choice of drivers shouldn't be limited to 8" FRs. In the past I've also used some 5"-6" like the Diatone P610, Pioneer PIM16 and even the cheap and cheerful Rat Shack 1354. Likewise there are people like Ding [Altec 604-8G] and others who have had success using 10"-15" full range/co-axials like an Altec Biflexes, 601, 604, EV 12/15trx, Goodmans and etc.

There are so many possibilties so let your imagination rule. IME, Qts values have limited effect on bass. If it sounds good to your ears, it's good!

Yes Joel, Pls share your xover secrets. I expected a very horny sound but after listening to them, I have to say that the integration betw. your drivers resulted in a very well balanced, dynamic but still natural sound. Good job.

I second Moz's observations here. We were together in a listen. I thought I had to look for some cover like behind the sofa once those horns become horny. But it never came! What we heard was as tame as a sheep. Balanced sound! Sorry to disappoint SC. None of SC's "pops and ticks." Indeed a very forgiving system that sounds lively and well spread for anyone's listening pleasure anywhere in the room even outside the room.

Before settling with a horn setup, I used one that is rather similar to Arnold's but using a fostex 206e and a ft17h supertweet. I had a backloaded fostex cab made for the 206e, i realized that it was not for me. The altec 419/614cab + fostex OB was the best application i had for the fostex 206e.

Am a "horny" but do have the following drivers appropriated for OBs:
Pioneer PIM8L
Goodmans Triaxiom
Pioneer PAX25B
The latter 2 are 10" 15/16ohm drivers.

perhaps next week i will have someone fetch it, if that is okay. I see that you also have an adaptor of sort to allow an 8 inch, baka puede ko rin mahiram.

Arnold, In my listening room, I only got horny once in my lifetime, The arm rests of my listening chair was a distraction during the moment... :) Out of topic na....

Going back to OBs... In normal circumstances, the OBs are used with full-range drivers so I had my 755Cs in OBs then... but we got hold of Altec horns/ woofer sets and at that time, we didn't have yet the 614/612 boxes... so based on the vintage Klangfilm speakers, we decided to try the horn/OB combination... thus the requirement for a crossover...

JE directed me to a x'over calculation site and used the first order (6db/octave) two-way x'over... we wanted to keep parts to a minimum as we felt, one good attribute of the full-range OBs is the non-usage of any x'over...

I'm using an 8 ohm compression driver for the mid/highs and 16ohms 12" woofer for the bass then a 511 horn which is rated at 500hz... so I just punched them in the calculator and came with a 40uf cap for the cut-off I wanted... My first x'over used parallel 20uf solens and then Prof JM was kind enough to give me 40uf oil caps from his parts treasure...

Next step was to control the horn, since I'm using OBs for the woofer, it needed a little taming... now you have to used the L-pad calculator from the same site... here. I experimented with different attenuation for the horns, if I remember right, I think I started with 10db and ended something around 12db or 14db... Stock on different resistors and try to get close to the values as required... don't be afraid to series or parallel them, and match them well...

The only thing we didn't follow in the first order x'ver is the use of choke for the low pass filter... we decided to let the bass speaker go full-range and overlap with the horn section of the hybrid OB...

I think SC is off-topic in his thread... he keeps on barking about the "TICKS and POPS" of analog in the "Let's Talk Digital" thread... oops OT na naman ako... 8)

Regards,
Joel

If Ben is listening, a short-let-me-listen-too to your OBs Ben is in order. We'll all be much obliged with a review of sorts from you Ben. Paano na yong Voigts mo? Thank you most!

Rex when are you crossing the path of no return. Some of the most ardent lovers of the LS are now using OBs as well. To repeat, kailan?

oo nga eh, naunahan pa ako ni BenC. frankly, i am seriously considering it. Hirap lang eh, ang nagiging reference sound ko eh yung horns, 755c and 755a ng SET-UP. wheew :!: if only i had the moolah :?:

i think i'll need to sell  one of my G-301 to finance the OB project.

sana magkaroon ng OB meet. would like to experience OB rolling para lalong ma-define yung driver type preference ko for an OB.

may the force be with you
