(maganda ba tumunog acrylic?)

 ... yung ClearAudio mo may ka terno na kung sakali :D ... im not sure kung maganda tumunog, but as "wings" i dont think there would be any sonic penalty. Maganda for me at least yung may wood pa rin as "pillar" kung saan naka mount yung drivers.

I'm not sure if you were alluding an answer to this question but I'll ask it anyway...

Was the wood-acrylic combo purely for gaining pogi points or are there sonic benefits?

Long term, would acrylic stay clear given dust, wear & tear, etc.?

Thanks in advance!

Hi rtsy,

Pogi points?? Taste is subjective.. Sound?? the only way to find out is to try, I just based it on my gut feel that coupling different materials w/ different resonant proprties could prove "synergistic"? Again, the only way to find out is to try... Could be an expensive exercise though (diba Arnold?? hehe)....

Quality of acrylic just like wood is important, just ask Mike or ihatejazz ... Anyways, different types of quality/thickness of wood and acrylic combined could sound widely different. So it's mainly down to availability and choice.

For OB testing purposes though, "voidless" marine ply muna.

vintage_dog, i don't know if your neighbors will like it  but macolive who listen to them last week described the Altec 2459A in OB as "electrostatic sounding."

red76, ayaw ko na ng acrylic. masakit sa bulsa. on secontot, yung inaawitan ko dito na executive table ay 5K, samatalang yung isang sheet ng 6' x 4' na acrylic ay 5.9K.... hmmm, esep esep

5pm saturday. my open baffles with Altec 2459As were finally hooked-up to the Tono 300b. Wow, these speakers threw a huge sound extending beyond the walls of my music room.

i must admit, i've not been a big fan of OBs. the ones i've heard had those giant 15 inchers. they played loud indeed but you have to step back some 30 feet away to really appreciate them. not the 8 inch drivers. they are simply perfect for most rooms.

i was very surprised these speakers produced decent bass (well, not as deep as ike's voigts), but low enough you won't beg for more. vocals, strings (guitar, piano) and winds (sax, trumpet, flute) came through very clearly, articulately....

these speakers far exceeded my expectations on how vintage speakers and open baffles should sound. they sang beautifully with 1.3 watts per channel of power from the Sun Audio VT25 amp. what a combo. i've been looking for a perfect pair for these amps, and the altec is the answer! the sound is a hybrid Fostex and LS3/5A, but probably better in the mids...listen for yourself.

thanks to arnold...this guy is a bad influence though. now i have to find a spot for these speakers in my already crowded music room :-) special thanks to JohnP, who gave me these drivers sometime last year (and it has been gathering dust until yesterday).

i'll try them on some analog this sunday.

These OB's sound great. I had a chancetolisten to arnold's and they exhibited a natural, open quality that had the ease of a Quad ESL. My initial expectations were confirmed and left me with favorable impressions.

Instruments & vocals were presented in a huge space that was fabulously open and natural. This was definitely the opposite of the boxy, closed-in sound from regular speakers. It also did not have the box resonances of typical cone speakers w/ enclosures.

Bass was better that I thought it would be. It was not as low and defined as arnold's other altec system but it was good enough for most material I tend to listen to. If my memory serves me right, there are only few instruments that go lower than 80Hz- a double bass, pipe organ, timpani and piano.

Guitar plucks were very well handled. Piano was rendered well but I detected some overhang and smearing in the transient attack. These did not distract from the music or slowed it down. A slight lowering of the volume level ameliorated the response so I suspect it can probably be corrected with a little more room damping.

Being a single driver, the OB did not exhibit anyof the disjointed FR common with poorly integrated drivers. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I wonder how it would sound with a 45 or monoplate 2A3. :)

Now let's try that 755A OB...

vintage_dog, welcome to Altec world :) glad to hear you like them. these speakers produce bass better than the Infinity would in my room. it also is not sensitive to speaker placement, does not require toe-in and all those religious setup i did for about a dozen speakers i tried in this room.

mozilla, it was a pleasure having you and ichabod once more. you're hard to please, sonically, so i really appreciate your observations. you were listening to my JE Labs 2A3 with Sovtek  had we have enough time, we could have listened to the RCA 2A3 or the Cunningham 45 ;) you can always drop by

bakit natahimik si ichabod?

oh, di ko naibigay sa inyo yung magic eraser...
