Sa totoo lang jon, you know how many speakers i've tried in this room. From Axiom to Coincident to Opera to Triangle, Spendor, etc.

These Altecs are hard to beat, and then i-consider mo pa yung price point! Pangit nga lang!

Sir A,

True, I also have tried the Altec 403s (choobs lent me his - I use them as reference) while experimenting on my Dai-ichis - and they (Altecs) sounded great. truly one driver that is hard to beat, especially on the mid-range frequencies.

Sabi nga nila - Nevermind kung pangit baffle, basta maganda tumunog, di naman mapapansin yan pag patay na ang ilaw, di ba :D :D :D

Muhkang Happy talaga and pasok ng New Year mo

Cheers

Good finish will finish the ugliness of those open/close cabinets. Finish mo ng parang strad violin, baka mas gumanda pa tunog...who knows?

Thanks for the poster who mentioned the 403s. I hope VD can do his and tell us if it gives all the others a run for their money. The best cost vs. performance ratio is what we all wish to have.

james, do you want a copy of the Joseph Esmilla article from Sound Practices where he rated several 8-inchers including the 403A?

let's see kung papahiram sa akin ni vd yung 403A nya :D so i can put it into my OB and compare it with the 2459A that is superb (to this ears, ha)

I was surprised at how good this driver sounds on the open baffle. The same open baffle character was there - open, dynamic, big sounding, but on top of it, this 8-incher does convincing bass too.

Hi Arnie,

"Mats" uses Supravox EXC drivers on top with Chinese made Madison (not Madisound) Exexutioner 21" woofers. He scored them at Steelsound.

Many other woofers (sizes) that looks suited for OB. You don't really need them since you arlready have the Altec 10"rs, but others who are curious in OB/Dipole with lower bass might be interested.

arnoldc wrote:jo2, yes no 300B. well, at least with these speakers, I don't see a need for more than 3watts. So my 300B tubes will be stuck in the box for a long, long while.

red76, sort of. This is how it looks like.

The Altec 406-8Y on unfinished 614 cabinet with Altec 2459A on top with small open baffle. A black piano finish was suggested for these cabinets, but it seems to cost more than the entire thing :D

vintage_dog,

The Altec 2459A fitted on my previous open baffle. Due to the excellent music reproduction I got from this combination, I will have a finished, decent-looking open baffle made.

I was surprised at how good this driver sounds on the open baffle. The same open baffle character was there - open, dynamic, big sounding, but on top of it, this 8-incher does convincing bass too.

I'm not sure how this will go along with your room accent but, I know you have ways :)

Ganda niyan! Congrats to you! It seems you are finally happy!

Happy New Year as well!

Greetings!

Subtle plug yan for your acrylic products sir... :D Discounted na ba pag nagpagawa ako ng Thorens dustcover?

Seriously though, type ko wood + lexan or acrylic as OB:

In this case, maple ang wood.

 ... yung ClearAudio mo may ka terno na kung sakali :D ... im not sure kung maganda tumunog, but as "wings" i dont think there would be any sonic penalty. Maganda for me at least yung may wood pa rin as "pillar" kung saan naka mount yung drivers.
