Conquering a square room (with Altec 2459a OBs)

Postby arnoldc » Tue Dec 28, 2004 9:08 am

To those who have noticed my whining about my square room, it's lack of bass, the suckout of music, etc. must have thought about kicking my ass to shut up

But now, I have a reason to rejoice ;)

I've finally tuned my Altec system (naks!) and have conquered the room. In this same problematic room, these speakers gave me big soundstage, upper, mid, and low, yes I said low, bass. Not to mention openness, dynamic of both micro and macro level, real efficiency, and great tonal balance.

All these for a staggering amount of P16,000 :D Of course guidance from the Altec boys - setup1, setup2, setup6, john (poscablo), plasticman (the initial inspiration), and red76, troporobo (lent me his Fostex tweets) - priceless!

Now I have enjoyed orchestral music from London Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Symphony, etc., like never before from mighty 3watts of power from my 2A3. Now, it's time to open my sealed Metallica S & M ;)

This is what 3watts and high efficiency, real high efficiency, can do for us. And it won't stop there, as vintage_dog lent me his Sun Audio VT-25, already gathering dust  with its mighty 1.2watts delivered stunning dynamics with the Altec speakers. I am so convinced, this prompted me to finally axe my 300B and say goodbye to my 807. Welcome VT-25/10-Y and probably a 71

This room caused my Infinity Kappa to submit, only to raise the white flag when the Altec came.

The Kappa is now serving the living room system, where it sounded best!

End of whining... for good.

Maybe this the reason BIG GUNS like Setup1, Mang Johnny and OldFogey have open baffle speakers considering thay can have the pick of any speakers...welcome to their club. Now should I try to pursue this route...ouch!!!!!! na naman!!!!

Another congrats Arnold. That's the real audiophile spirit!

I can see you never give up on anything thrown at you. There's always the right equation for everything audio I believe. A task every single one of us must face and conquer. There's no bad sound out there if one knows how. Happy for you! You've done me much, motivating to do my set-up too real quick. Will probably call it set-up7 to keep the altec line!

No longer a "square" peg in a round speaker for sound!

Arnold - I'm curious about your final speaker placement. Did you use anything similar to the Cardas method or is that approach not so useful for open baffles? I also have a square room and found it worked somewhat for my floorstanders, but there is lots of room for improvement still. tr

robert, I never bothered with speaker placement this time. The soundstage is big enough to put me into it. With the Infinity I used Audio Physic method.

sideview with Raven tweeter added - not really needed!
Rather use a vintage Hornloaded Kelly Ribbon tweeter (aka known as Decca ribbons later) from 3k-20k IF you could fond one to sub the altec 8".

jo2, yes no 300B. well, at least with these speakers, I don't see a need for more than 3watts. So my 300B tubes will be stuck in the box for a long, long while.

red76, sort of. This is how it looks like.

The Altec 406-8Y on unfinished 614 cabinet with Altec 2459A on top with small open baffle. A black piano finish was suggested for these cabinets, but it seems to cost more than the entire thing :D

Image

vintage_dog,

The Altec 2459A fitted on my previous open baffle. Due to the excellent music reproduction I got from this combination, I will have a finished, decent-looking open baffle made.

I was surprised at how good this driver sounds on the open baffle. The same open baffle character was there - open, dynamic, big sounding, but on top of it, this 8-incher does convincing bass too.

Image

I'm not sure how this will go along with your room accent but, I know you have ways :)
