Altec and open baffle

Altec Open Baffles, etc.

Postby arnoldc » Fri Sep 24, 2004 1:32 pm

hi robert, i used this to make calculations - http://ccs.exl.info/calc_cr.html#first which at 5kHz cutoff is 4uF (rounded off), 10kHz is 2uF (rounded off). the FT66 definitely needs attenuation and i've tried -3dB -6dB but due to its higher efficiency compared to the 406-8Y i may need more attenuation for my purpose. i might go with a tweeter solution and i'm just looking at alternatives which include the FT17H, the Aurum Cantus ribbons, and others. i no longer need an L-pad as i've made my own resistor combinations for the -3db and -6db. if you like i can make one for you gratis. just let me know what attenuation level you need and what is the power going into the speakers.

Arnold,

GM is one of those off the cuff math whiz ala insta-enclosure ideas based on driver parameters (Fostex and Jordan, etc) that surprisingly sound good for those who built them. He's also a hardcore Altec Horns owner and all around nice guy (he has two alnico 515's in his bass bin that he rolls off naturally).

Renovating his living room (see ceiling).

Anyways, you are on the right track .. since the FR you have is actually a widerange PA driver (baka guitar, labas na labas ang vibrato ng strat ni SRV nyan :D ). So the 406+ 2459 + horn tweet in OB is just the perfect demonic swill  for musical ecstacy 8)

Sir Mandy and Arnold,

Pwede nyo pa habol yan sa Nov Hifi Show sa DIY room....

Yes, but with a twist... FT?? + 2459 in Open Baffle (you can add some wings on the side in 45deg angles) on TOP of Karlson Slot Bass Bin. Ping for "freddyi" at AA HE Spkrs Asylum for Karlson plans using an 10" Altec 406 or other high Qts type 10" woofers.

Arnold - Thanks for the offer but I think I've got attenuation under control (at least this is the part that I understand well enough to do on my own!) and will start at about -3 dB. I had Madisound do a LEAP simulation for me on the crossover frequency and am not sure about their suggestion though (seems much too high), so will ask them to double-check their results. Robert

Found a thread on X15, K15, and K12. Ask for K12 plans, it would be more compact but still have that "kick" IMO:

Try Bi-Amping.... 807 for the 406 and any of your DHT amps for the 2459 and tweter combo. It might work well. Magastos nga lang sa kuryente.

Bat malungkot? It's not as complicated than a true folded basshorn. Kaya nang carpenter yan with speaker building experience. Imporante lang removable yung back panel with screws. I have some speaker gasket lining if you need some.

Image

Parang ganyan nasa isip ko pero with smaller bass bins kasi 10" drivers. Saka yung OB on top would be better if it had small "wings" on the side with 45deg angles comapred sa above na triangular with thick baffle. Yung motif ng OB/Karlson speaker above parang Sphinx.

Hi Sir V_D,

If these 2 pairs are yours it would be nice to try it out in Dipole Woofer enclosures for each channel for bass duties:

Just put a small OB with an appropriate fullranger like Arnold's 2459A on top....

francis, james,

Ed dropped by yesterday to bring one of the amps for dressing in preparation for the show. We listened to Rey Valera on vinyl played by the Champion, amplified by my 807 amp and the speakers were my open baffles. It will be best to ask him about his experience ;)

Ed please speak up. While we were getting excited discussing a Quad esl 63 offer at the price of an LS 3/5a, we didn't know it got sold two days earlier. But your post here is my saving grace or alternative to pursue that altec dream with open baffles.

Expect grant to give it a listen bai.

james, grant plans to drop by tonight. Ed does not post anymore, but he did smile again after despising audio for quite a while.

Good. A lot of good things are coming Grant's way. You better ask him what the moment he does. Also, I'd be glad to hear his impressions on your open baffles since Ed prefers to hold his peace. Before nature, we all stand in awe and become speechless. If one becomes that (-; I consider it a good indication of the truth you speak.

When I got the OBs done, couldn't wait to have these altecs going. So you still see they're clipped on alligators. Nothing's permanent in life, audio included.

Anyway my perception of its sound and what it can do has not changed from day 1. I share marty_e's sound impressions in another topic on OBs.

Bai Grant, thanks for posting the pictures.
