sir, the MT-35 you have in that picture is a taiwan version and uses a metal face plate. The one we carry is the European version and it uses a wooden faceplate. Internally, the European version uses better materials and should be a tad more expensive. Externally... well i think its subjective but the wooden one is pretty elegant too

Though am not connected with Audio Amplified, let me answer: I won't count on this rumor. You can use any el34, just set the bias current to recommended 30-35ma. You can even use 6550 or KT88 just rebias it to 40ma. That's theoretically speaking because in the case of mt-35, the holes in the chassis where the el34 go are not big enough to accommodate either 6550 or kt88. The old TA-30 and the spanking new A-50T do not have this limitation.
