That floor was generally staid and bereft of the tumult two floors up. Save for the exhibitors relegated to that area, and the receptionists cum registrants that could dare your manly skills. specially that lady in the middle. there were, suddenly but discreetly, men with height, decently dressed and with erect gaits. and one was always beside Tonyboy.
yeah, Tonyboy. i noticed him to be a little giddy that time. normally, with closing time around the corner, he would be with his clipboard, micromanaging, mvoing about like a hamster on espresso, barking at all exhibitors (who had already paid him) to start packing up and do the egress dance. but here he was, grinning from ear to ear, moving like he had a tad too much sugar, but planted in one place at the elevator area, with a decently dressed man with height and an erect gait.
a little bit earlier, my Pareng Val sternly ordered me not to leave because someone high up there would be arriving. unsure of what time that would be, i had to go my way. i proceeded to fetch an item i left at the 2nd floor before leaving in earnest and attend to the convalescence of a gouty knee. while waiting for an elevator to arrive, i struck up a conversation with Tonyman, that primary catalyst of every annual HiFi show, who appeared, as i said, giddy, still at that area covering the elevators --- and i struck up a conversation with him. it was pleasantly strange that this plebeian had an actual conversation going on with this handsome lad of landed gentry and respected pedigree, superb organizer and former mobile party demigod talking with a regular kibitzer, a Wiredstate asungot. it was a little out of kilter.
ahhh, Tonyboy wasn't giddy, he was, i dare say, happy and with anticipation, and he was killing the anticipation by talking to an asungot, while waiting for the big enchilada to arrive.
the elevators were unusually tardy, and when one came, it was full. the next available one, we entered, but one friend caused it to overload and we had to go out. malas. or so it seemed. because when the next car came along, lo and behold, the big enchilada came out smiling, with Wiredstate primus inter pares Jack Duavit showing the way and uttering the words, "by the way, this is Tonyboy de Leon, the organizer..." while finally an available elevator did arrive, out tumbles a hurrying Francis Sogono catching up with the trail of all those important people where he belonged. in the annual HiFi Shows, a Vintage Dog IS an important person.
di ko na sinundan. i didn't want to jostle with the throng to get to be at the eye of that storm. tama na yung die hard fan at fellow audiophile ako. to have seen the da Man grace the premiere event that fully endorses my beloved hobby is a double shot of single malt to my soul. i am very very pleased that he came. how many hobbies and simple pleasures can lay claim to that distinction of having the nation's first servant grace your red letter day among the millions begging for his presence, and on a Sunday at that?
i don't care if you don't like the guy or hate his guts, or if you don't agree with his leadership and administrative style, or if you think you are more intelligent than he is. this day, at the premiere audio-visual gathering of industry stalwarts and enthusiasts in the country, the President was, to us in the audio hobby, ours. it doesn't get any better than that.
it was around 3:00 in the afternoon, it was a peacefully beautiful sunny day. outside the hotel entrance, along the driveway, were the discreet vestiges of a high office, and over yonder at strategic points in the commercial district were the usual police escorts. funny, but it didn't strike me as intimidating or authoritative. in fact, as i passed all these security arrangements, i felt proud. yung amo niyo, matatagalan pa dahil nag-eenjoy... looking back at that moment at the elevators, our failed attempts at promptly getting into one proved to be, in a word, serendipitous. i hope P-Noy did also did get to see all those superb DiY audio gear created by Filipinos. he would have been proud of that, too.

Val had better photos because they're taken in their room. I was blocked by the presidential escorts many times, got reprimanded for using flash, hinabol pa ako sa 2nd floor as I follow P-noy. Dios ko, ayaw ko na mag photograph ng Presidente!
