Lincoln Mayorga Vol. 1 LP (aka THE S-9)

Postby jadis » Sun Sep 19, 2004 8:34 pm

For all these years, I thought this LP was a myth. I know of only
2 people who say they own it, and both tell me they never even
played it for their own reasons. Most collectors of that era, the early
70s, tell me they have not even seen a hard copy. Prior to this one,
I had seen and held one hard copy and that was it, never even got
to listen to it. And today, a good friend was kind enough to bring his
newly acquired copy of the elusive 'Lincoln Mayorga and Distinguished
Colleagues (S-9), which some would call the Volume 1 because of 2
succeeding series of this title, The Missing Link (Vol.2) and another
which is called Lincoln Mayorga and Distinguished Colleagues Vol. 3.

Given the time constraint, we played on 2 cuts in my listening room.
Side 2 cut 3, She's Leaving Home; and Side 2 cut 5, All the Things You
Are. Both are beautifully rendered. And on the first one, Lincoln Mayorga
plays the harpsichord. The overall sound is excellent, and the band is
reminiscent of the 'old' band sound, as opposed to the contemporary
'modern' band sound which most of us are familiar with. That is the
sound of the times, and it is accurately portrayed in this album.

Those familiar with Sheffield D2D LPs will be able to sense the
'evolution of the band instruments being played, from 70s type
to 80s type.

Hi,
I also have a copy and would like to point out that this LP has the Sheffield Tower logo (as shown). The 'Missing Linc' LP was first issued out with the Sheffield Tower and succeeding releases were already with the Morning Glory logo. Fortunately, I have both issues. All the S-1 to S-9 issues were with the Sheffield Tower logos.
Incidentally, my source is a good friend of mine in So. Cal. who used to work for Sheffield as its Marketing Director. Sometimes the S-9 comes out in eBay and could fetch something like $150.00 nm opened and double for a sealed one.

audiophileman2002,

Thanks for sharing. That is true. Of late, there has been two posts on this LP on
ebay. The first seller actually had two copies, one copy wherein side 1 is bad and another
where side 2 is bad. So he sold the two for the price of one. And a few days ago, another
copy was sold, and the condition of vinyl as VG to VG+, acc. to my friend.

Hi,

I have the volume 3 but instead of the S-9, it says LAB-1 and (SL-5). It still has the same tower label but the color is maroon instead of red. Is there a difference in terms of quality and value?

Hi jadis / tnt,
I believe my friend still has one opened copy and one sealed one (S-9). S-9 came out only in Tower logo. Unfortunately, he is not selling either one. The sealed one was a gift from Lincoln Mayorga and autographed by him. I'm currently in Manila, will ask him upon my return to the US before Thanksgiving.
The 'Missing Linc' Vol. 2 S-10 came out with both Tower logo (initially) and later issues Monrning Glory logos, different takes. My copy of the Tower logo is still sealed.
As for the Vol. 3, I also have both the Tower logo and Morning Glory. My copy of the Tower logo has a dark red label can possibly be called maroon. Have not really seen a bright red. In terms of quality (Tower vs. Morning Glory), I would say the same, both are on virgin vinyl just different takes. If you get the Morning Glory logo, you can look for the differences. Difference in value, possibly but not that much because the value of the Morning Glory logo is not high. But who knows. You know how crazy our world is in North America, price is dictated by supply and demand. If there is someone who wants something badly it could get to be big bucks.

Hi Philip,

I just bought a Lincoln Mayorga ( Brahms / Sheffield labs) LP and noticed a piece of paper inside saying that for better results, i can interchange the polarity of the termination on each side of the speakers. Would you know the reason why they would recommend doing this?

Hope to hear from you soon.

Hi Dong,

I believe it mostly has to do with the LP being recorded in an 'inverse phase'. Although
I had that LP before and I never saw that leaflet. But thanks for sharing. Some records
sound better phase inverted, but for me, one HAS to TRY and determine which phase
sounds better. Sometimes, you might not even notice a difference. Let me know what
you arrive at.

Hi Minicooper,
Opened S-9 really goes for that price. As I stated last Oct. it goes for around $150 for a nm opened copy and about $300 for a sealed one. That LP is not a Test Pressing. Hope you have better luck next time! Cheers!

Hi audiophileman, I actually used your post as guide on pricing. I kind of figured out that the LP is not a test pressing and the seller probably didn't know he had a gem. 'til next time...

Cheers!

Hey Minicooper,
You wanna hear the test pressing on a single ended amp? Visit me here in Clarksville, MD near DC.
If you are into jazz, collectibles are: Ry Cooder 'Jazz' on MOFI, Miles Davis "Someday My Prince Will Come' on MOFI, Billie Holiday 'Body and Soul' on MOFI.
Cheers!

a couple of months ago, audiophileusa.com was selling a sealed copy which has 'mildew'
on the corner of the jacket at $400. it is now gone. and many months before, a friend of
mine bought a mint copy from him for $300, that was the one on the picture above.

audiophileman2002,

Hi. A friend told me he got a sealed S17, featuring Mayorga and Victor Feldman. I never even knew such a thing existed. And lately he said there is an S16 and S18 on ebay. Would you know anything about these late S numbered LPs? Thanks.
