Hi Jadis,
As far as I know the S series are those that was produced before the advent of the LAB series. I believe only S9 and S10 were direct to discs. Some of those S series specially the first ones were pressed in limited quantities and just given to friends, associates and few sold. In the very beginning, it was a garage type operations and the mother of Sax was the one mailing out the LPs. All the S series had the Tower logo. As far a collectability for value ????? Cheers,

thnx audiophileman2002. well, audiophileusa.com sold the sealed s17 at $125 which my friend got. the caption said it was the rarest of the sheffields...i hope i get to hear it as to what it is like. btw, RR, the other main audiophile label in those days, also has a bit or 'rarities' in their lineup. i was able to get an RR-2, Steve Gordon playing Chopin but I hardly can find it listed on RRs own catalog or the net. The next number I have seen is the RR-5, also by Steve Gordon, and RR-6, a jazz album, and that is followed by RR-7, Prof Johnson's Astounding Sound Show, all these, I believe, were never released on CD.

Hi Jadis,
The following are still available at elusivedisc.com
RR-36 EILEEN FARRELL/SINGS ALEC WILDER LP Rare! Out of print! Only a few copies available!
This singer's style and approach have jazz connections, but her sound is more in a show business, pre-rock pop vein than an improvising mode. Format: Reference Recordings LP $14.99

RR-36WJ EILEEN FARRELL/SINGS ALEC WILDER LP (WHITE JACKET) Rare! Out of print! Only a few copies available!
This singer's style and approach have jazz connections, but her sound is more in a show business, pre-rock pop vein than an improvising mode. Format: Reference Recordings LP (White Jacket) $7.99

RR-32WJ EILEEN FARRELL/SINGS RODGERS-HART LP (WHITE JACKET) Rare! Out of print! Only a few copies available! Eileen's sound is at her best with these incomparable ballads. Format: Reference Recordings LP (White Jacket) $14.99

RR-27 ALBERT FULLER/PLAYS RAMEAU LP Rare! Out of print! Only a few copies available!
Harpsichordist Albert Fuller was the first to perform and record Jean-Phillipe Rameau's entire original keyboard compositions, this is perhaps the most vivid, realistic recording of the harpsichord ever made!
Format: Reference Recordings LP $14.99

Don't know if you are interested in any of those.

Sir, a question if I may.

I've heard 12ax7s like teles and mullards. I wonder if you can oblige me how the RCA old version black plates might sound in comparison. Thanks a whole lot.

ichabod,

Hi. I tried them a long time ago and my impression that is was too dark sounding for my system. The mid was full bodied, in fact, very thick and round and lush, but for my taste there was an absence of transparency when compared to the Teles or Mullards. Then again, it may fit a livelier system well.

Thanks for that take of the RCA 12AX7s black plate. I wonder why a pilot SA 232 user recoomends it to high heavens. There's something I'm missing here and will figure out.

Thanks again.

hi audiophileman2002,

Yes. Well, it sounds a bit unconventional....I don't know what type of music it is even. Lincoln playing some 'strange' piano tunes and Feldman playing the same kind of strange stuff on percussion. Kinda reminds of the DMP CD Pugh-Taylor Project.

Hi Jadis,
Interesting! Hope you like it.
My friend who used to be the MD at Sheffield only casually mentioned about other albums in the S series but never did he mention about me chasing some of those.
